When Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) top sniper officer Margarite Hunter takes a position on the city’s crime unit, her goal is to save lives rather than take them.
While searching for two missing young women, Mags and her partner Hank uncover an extensive trafficking and crime ring. Meanwhile, Charlie Mahone is brought out of retirement from the Canadian military to find a lost soldier suspected of seeking revenge on the man who killed his family.
When their paths cross, the sparks threaten to derail both of their investigations. Mags soon realizes that Charlie’s story goes much deeper than what he lets on. She needs to stop the killer before more lives are lost, and Charlie needs to stay out of her way. She has no time for love, no matter how chiselled its jawline. But to break the crime ring that strangles her city, they will need to work together, and that requires something she doesn’t give easily: Trust.
A short while ago I read and reviewed an incredibly entertaining and thrilling novel called Out of the Storm, a story which is the first in the WPS Crime series courtesy of the exceptional author Carol Ashe. Out of Focus is the sequel to Out of the Storm and I confess book lovers that I was excited and eager to read Out of Focus! Out of the Storm was a thrilling novel that compelled me to the start to the very end thanks to its combination of a detective drama laced with romance. If you are a reader who loves detective books that follow a female protagonist and love being taken on an adventure that is unpredictable, then the WPS Crime series is for you! However, if you need more convincing read more to learn about this incredible book.
Out of Focus will depart from the story in Out of the Storm and follow a new protagonist called Margarite Hunter, a female officer who has just been appointed to the city’s crime unit. Margarite wants to do better, and she wants to ‘save lives rather than take them.’ Not long into her new role, Margarite will be appointed a case of two missing young women, and when she starts to investigate this with her partner Hank, they both will discover something more horrific and terrifying than what they previously thought. Together Margarite and Hank will uncover a trafficking and crime operation. The reader will follow them on this journey to discover the truth and get justice for the victims and bring the criminals to justice, and this book lovers is the premise of the exception Out of Focus.
Out of Focus is an intense, gripping and shocking read that will entertain as well as excite its readers with its dramatic content. The story of Out of Focus is one that I immensely love, and this is thanks to a few reasons which I will explore in my review. In short the reasons are because this book hosts dramatic content that will evoke emotions in its readers, it is full of enigmatic characters and a fierce female protagonist, and lastly, the literature from beginning to end is sensational and will have the readers turning the pages with haste from the very start. If you are a reader, who loves detective novels that depict realistic crime… crime that most authors would run a mile from, then Out of Focus is most certainly the book for you.
The story of Out of Focus will take its readers on a journey of crime. The author Carol Ashe will explore many hard-hitting themes such as trafficking. Ashe explores this topic in an honest, realistic way in which she does not shy away from sharing details. I believe that the story of Out of Focus is so believable as well as gripping because Ashe has been brazen with her literature and decided to bare all of the troubling subjects it explores. If Ashe held back on the exploration of these topics, then the novel would not work as the reader can always tell when an author is holding back, that is why I am in awe of Ashe for being brave and shedding light on many home truths that happen all over the world today.
Carol Ashe is clearly a talented writer, this is evident thanks to her literature throughout her book and her ability to grasp the reader’s attention from the start. What I love about Ashe’s writing is that she does not mess around! She hooks the reader from the start and keeps them reading until the very end, and that is one of the many qualities I love about her literature.
