Set in 13th century Europe. A hunter is abducted and his sister is cruelly raped and killed. The hunter ends up on a trading company ship. The overseer of the cog needs someone to do his dirty work, and the hunter seeks revenge. So he has no choice but to make a deal with the overseer, in return the hunter will find out who orchestrated the event that lead to his sister’s brutal death. One hand washes the other. They sail through the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, from kingdom to kingdom, port to port, the hunter is willing to do anything it takes. Through joint effort, the hunter and the overseer become cruelly efficient partners and even friends.
A short while ago I read and reviewed an incredible book called Magnificent King of Moretania written by the equally astonishing author Gusme Bonomi and well, the book, despite being a short story was so brilliant that I knew I had to read Bonomi’s other release Otis: True Sea Monsters. I admit that I was excited to read Otis, the description above alludes to themes of tragedy, revenge, a voyage and history and I love each of these individual themes, so the fact that they are all combined in one novel means that I was even more excited! Now that I have finished reading Otis I can happily write that Bonomi has done it again! Never before have I been so entertained with a historical fiction revenge tale so already I have to recommend the book to you lovely readers because it is a novel that should be read!
Otis: True Sea Monsters is set in 13th century Europe and follows a hunter on a journey of revenge. The hunter at the beginning of the novel is abducted but what is worse than this is that his sister is brutally raped and killed. The hunter will be placed upon a trading ship and when he is he knows that he has to seek revenge and find out how and why the events leading to his sister’s sad death occurred. The reader will follow the hunter on his voyage across the Atlantic, and the Mediterranean and the journey that unfolds is a gripping one that will have readers intrigued and turning the pages with haste.
The story of Otis: True Sea Monsters is quite frankly brilliant and an incredibly enjoyable story. Never before have I read a book that managed to captivate my attention so fast, the razor-sharp narrative combined with the harrowing story had me enthralled. The story is, of course, heartbreaking because at the core of the story is the rape and murder of the protagonist’s sister but the events that unravel afterward are phenomenal and let me tell you now book lovers, this book would make for the best movie!
Gusme Bonomi is an author whose work I have grown to love. What struck me with his novel Magnificent King of Moretania was his extraordinary ability to develop a story quickly and the setting fast, and with Otis, he managed to do this all over again. The story laced throughout the pages is immaculately thought out and so well-developed that the reader will be able to picture the events that are unfolding in their mind in a wealth of detail.
As Otis: True Sea Monsters is a captivating, thrilling and unforgettable book that should not be missed, I, of course, have to award the book five stars!
