Alice, a young woman prone to intuitive insights and loyalty to the only family she has ever known, leaves England for the rigid colony of the Massachusetts Bay in 1635 in hopes of reuniting with them again. Finally settling in Windsor, Connecticut, she encounters the rich American wilderness and its inhabitants, her own healing abilities, and the blinding fears of Puritan leaders which collide and set the stage for America’s first witch hanging, her own, on May 26, 1647.
This event and Alice’s ties to her beloved family are catalysts that influence Connecticut’s Governor John Winthrop Jr. to halt witchcraft hangings in much later years.
Paradoxically, these same ties and the memory of the incidents that led to her accusation become a secret and destructive force behind Cotton Mather’s written commentary on the Salem witch trials of 1692, provoking further witchcraft hysteria in Massachusetts forty-five years after her death.
The author uses extensive historical research combined with literary inventions, to bring forth a shocking and passionate narrative theory explaining this tragic and important episode in American history and in the life of Alice (Alse) Young, America’s first witch hanging victim.
One of Windsor: The Untold Story of America’s First Witch Hanging is a book I was keen to read ever since discovering it. Ever since I was young, I have been fascinated with witches, and this stems from the fact that I am a redhead and during the Witch trials that occurred in places all over the world, redheads were frequently hanged just for the color of their hair. When I learned of this, I became fascinated with learning about witch trials and the sad demise of the women who were wrongly accused and so that is why One of Windsor was discovered. One of Windsor is a sensational book that is a historical fiction novel laced with a significant amount of knowledge on what it was like at a time when the name ‘Witch’ was first spoken. The story is historical fiction; however, the author Beth Caruso has clearly done a tremendous amount of research on the subject of witch hangings and what it was like during the 16th and 17th century, especially for those that were accused. The story that unfolds is a stellar, in-depth and compelling one that grasped me from the get-go and kept me entertained until the very end thanks to the dramatic plot and intriguing characters. What I am about to write is a bold statement, but One of Windsor has to be one of my favorite historical fiction tales of all time. This is because the novel enchanted me from the start, kept me intrigued thanks to the rich history and kept me captivated thanks to the well thought-out, flawlessly written literature. If you are a reader who is looking to get lost in a timeless story, then I would recommend One of Windsor but if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more about this astounding book!
One of Windsor will take its readers on a journey back in time to 1647 Colonial Connecticut, and during this time the reader will be introduced to a woman called Alice Young who is known for being the first woman to be hanged as a witch. Not much is known about this real woman in history and so that is why the insanely talented author Beth Caruso has written a story based around her and weaves together a story of why Alice was accused and murdered all while giving the reader insight into what it was like to live during this point in history that is pivotal and notorious. What unfolds is an exceptionally well developed and thought out story that will cater to hardcore history fanatics and those that love historical fiction.
The story of One of Windsor is one that will take readers on an incredible journey through history. As a woman who loves history, I was in my element with this book, I believe that some events are based on real history; however, the book is described as historical fiction. So I would, as a reader, focus more on the fictional side, although I do know that there is truth about the protagonist of the novel and the setting. One of Windsor is a book with an ever-expanding story and the excellent author, Beth Caruso has a wealth of knowledge on topics, events, and places that perfectly compliment the expansive story which in turn keeps the reader reading!
Beth Caruso is a newly discovered author of mine; however, her story is excellent and is making me want to reread her book! Caruso expresses many writing talents throughout her book, but her core talents I believe are her descriptive powers and her beautiful prose that is laced with history and knowledge. The knowledge Caruso has laced throughout the novel is excellent and will keep readers fascinated; I am impressed by the depth of knowledge and admire Caruso for taking the time to make sure that everything matched with regards to times in history and customs.
Overall One of Windsor is a sensational, unique and dramatic novel that will take readers on an expansive journey that is unforgettable and unpredictable and so I have to award this spectacular and memorable book five stars!
