In the near future, mankind has exhausted the last of their fossil fuels and a new energy crisis holds the world in its terrifying grip. In a desperate gamble, it turns to geothermal energy and taps the Yellowstone caldera. It’s a success and the entirety of humanity benefits…for a time. Following the devastating eruption that ensues, mankind is forced to pick up the pieces of their shattered world and forms two factions. The Developers, those of humanity set on stripping the Earth of it’s remaining resources and leaving it behind to colonize first the moon, then the stars beyond. The Harmonizers, stalwart defenders of what they believe to be humanity’s one true home, dedicated to being more self-sufficient and eco-minded. As it’s been from the dawn of time when two groups can’t agree, there is strife, chaos, and eventually war. From the ashes of the conflict later to be known as the Great Division, a new species shall rise to see the world that was not of their making. It all begins here, in the first installment of the Of Mice Not Men universe.
Of Mice Not Men is a novel I was desperate to read ever since discovering it. Of Mice Not Men caught my attention right away thanks to its description which alludes to a near future in which all that we need is scarce, and so the world is in turmoil. I love dystopian novels, and I love even more when they are based on potential realities because although it is scary, it is informative as well as entertaining so it is safe for me to write that I was in my element while reading Of Mice Not Men! Every now and then a reader will come across that one book that blows them away, it is a somewhat generic term, but that is what Of Mice Not Men did to me… it blew me away and ever since completing it I have been thinking of its intricate and detailed story and how I need to re-read it! That is when you know book lovers that you have come across an incredible book when you are thinking of it when you have a million things to do. That is why I am already going to recommend Of Mice Not Men to you lovely readers, and yes, it may be early on in my review, but Of Mice Not Men is a novel not to be missed.
Of Mice Not Men is set in the near future in which crucial fossil fuels are no longer a thing thanks to humanity using them all up. This, in turn, sends the world into chaos because, without fossil fuels, the world has no energy and well, without power they are pretty much screwed! The fact that there are no fossil fuels left means that scientists and the Government are having to try dangerous tactics and this comes in the form of geothermal energy in which scientists draw power from the Yellowstone caldera. The mission was a success but one day, Yellowstone erupts and when it does the world is left in even more turmoil than before and this forces humans to find a new home… on the moon. The reader will follow the protagonists of the novel into space to try and save what there is left of humanity but the journey is not easy or smooth, and this book lovers is the premise of this remarkable novel.
Of Mice Not Men for me was thrilling, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. Of Mice Not Men was captivating to me from the start thanks to the unique premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Donald L. Canterbury who hooked me with his unique story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a dystopian novel that is refreshing and it is even more challenging to discover a dystopian story that does not rely on gimmicks and ridiculous action sequences! Of Mice Not Men does have some action-packed moments however they are tasteful and in no way gimmicky which is always fantastic in a book!
The premise of Of Mice Not Men is exceptional, original and unlike anything I have read before. Canterbury really has accomplished the near impossible, Canterbury has managed to write an entertaining, bewitching and flawless story that will perfectly unfold in readers minds like a movie and now that I think about it, why is this book not a movie already!
Donald L. Canterbury is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp his reader’s attention from the first page. Canterbury instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in dystopian novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust his reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly but with Canterbury, the reader will not encounter this issue because Canterbury instantly develops his characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.
Overall Of Mice Not Men is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so, I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
