No Fences in Alaska, Glen Sobey

Their worlds are about to come crashing down…

At sixteen years old, Harper Lyon’s life is spinning out of control. She threatens her parents with suicide unless she can meet her drug-dealing boyfriend, a college student who doesn’t know she’s pregnant. Cooper Lyons, her estranged grandfather, lives in rural Alaska with only his dog and cat for company. He has just been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, and he doesn’t plan on letting the disease run its course. Harper needs to escape her parents and decide what to do about the baby. She and her grandpa are worlds apart, but they may be exactly what the other needs. When Harper calls her grandfather, he welcomes the opportunity to help her and redeem his previous failure with his daughter Heather, who died from a drug overdose years ago.

Can they save each other?

No Fences in Alaska is an excellent book written by Glen Sobey and wow, what a stellar, poignant and captivating book. No Fences in Alaska for me was moving, captivating, and addictive right from the start, and I felt this from beginning to end. No Fences in Alaska was captivating to me from the start thanks to the premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Glen Sobey who from the beginning hooked me with his fantastic story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a novel which combines the themes this book does, and that is refreshing to me.

No Fences in Alaska is an exceptional novel that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the book, Harper Lyon, a sixteen-year old whose life is out of control. Harper is pregnant with her drug-dealing boyfriend, and he does not know. What’s worse for Harper is that her parents are not allowing her to see him, which makes Harper threaten suicide. The reader in No Fences in Alaska will also be introduced to the male protagonist of the novel, Cooper Lyons, Harper’s grandfather and like Harper, he is going through a lot as he has been recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and he does not plan on being around for it to take its course. The reader will follow Harper as she joins her grandfather, and together they learn the importance of life, and this book lovers is the premise of the incredible No Fences in Alaska.

The premise of No Fences in Alaska is exceptional, original, and unlike anything, I have read before. I loved the many themes and elements explored throughout the book, and all themes are explored by Sobey wonderfully, and he does this by lacing these interesting themes throughout the text flawlessly and weaving them with the story. The result of this makes No Fences in Alaska a highly addictive and fascinating read that is never once lackluster or predictable.

Glen Sobey is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp his reader’s attention from the first page. Sobey instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust his reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly, but with No Fences in Alaska, the reader, will not encounter this issue because Sobey instantly develops his characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.

Overall No Fences in Alaska is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars! If you are a reader who loves poignant novels that explore life and the meaning of living and more then I implore you to read No Fences in Alaska; it is a fast-paced, incredible novel that should not be missed.
