The Myth of Doing: Managing Guilt, Shame, Anxiety, Regret and Self-Judgment, Jill Eng

NonFiction, Self-Help & Motivational, Spirituality & Philosophy

This book validates who we are and what we do, despite our mind’s disapproving theories. The Myth of Doing speaks to the awareness that the mere state of being alive automatically puts us into activity, which means we are bound to whatever that action is in any particular moment. Drawing from eastern philosophies, naturalism, determinism, neuroscience, psychology and the Alexander Technique, all which illuminate non-dualistic perspectives on the human experience, Eng uses original language in directing us toward our own physical reality, which she brought to light in her first book, Body Over Mind. She now immerses us into the free will debate by highlighting the involuntarism of human behavior and our birthright to being part of the scientific, natural world. Acknowledgement of our interconnectedness with the cosmos can emotionally support us in our journey through our unique, personal timeline. Because our behavior is a result of physical laws and part of a causal chain that encompasses the entire universe, we can realize that the self-judging, inner criticism we commonly experience is based in illusion. As each of us must be on the single path we are on, this body of work Eng calls Mindful Reality can serve as a counterpoint to the mental efforts and pressures we assume necessary to carry out all of our choices and actions.

As a reader who adores self-help and inspirational books, I am always on the lookout for the next best one. I read a lot of self-help books, but never before have I read one as incredible as The Myth of Doing. The Myth of Doing is unlike any self-help/spiritual book I have ever read; its powerful words combined with its insightful knowledge has filled me with a renewed sense of wisdom and calm. The Myth of Doing is now a favorite book of mine, and I hope it will be your next favorite read too as it is utterly brilliant!

The Myth of Doing is a book that covers many topics which will perfectly aid all readers on how to overcome anxiety and depression, shame and guilt, and even offer ways to improve your self-esteem, all excellent themes that have the ability to change your life. What makes The Myth of Doing ever more unique and special than your average self-help book is that it draws on many different subjects to enlighten as well as entertain its readers. Jill Eng, the exceptionally talented author of The Myth of Doing, has wonderfully incorporated eastern philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, naturalism, determinism, and the Alexander Technique into her book to support her messages. Each chapter integrates and focuses on these many areas all with the hope of enlightening the reader. As I have now finished this book, I can happily write that not only did The Myth of Doing inspire me, it also illuminated me and renewed my love for all these topics, so I thank the author for her remarkable skill at piecing together a life-changing book.

The Myth of Doing might on first appearance seem to be packed full of too much information because of the numerous themes it laces throughout its content, but never once is the information too much. Jill Eng has written her book so that it is accessible to everybody; it can easily be read by beginners, who are first starting on their journey to enlightenment and the advanced, who have already been researching and practicing the subject matters she presents. Eng ensures that no reader is left behind, and I adore this mentality of hers. Every subject in this book is described perfectly in an eloquent, detailed, but easy to read manner which will inform you on many interesting topics…topics you may not even know of yet! I found myself learning as I read, and this is always a fantastic quality in a self-help book.

Jill Eng is a talented author, and exceptional thanks to her wealth of knowledge. It is also evident to the reader early on that Eng is passionate about her work and helping people. This amazing book reads beautifully; the reader won’t be able to resist turning the pages with haste not only because of how incredible her writing is, but also because her passion shines off the page. Below I am going to share some mini-reviews of this book provided by some experts. These professionals include a certified yoga instructor, a social worker and a writer, which proves that Jill Eng truly is a voice and force to be reckoned with!

“In this well-grounded book, Ms. Eng eloquently helps to put the argument of free will to rest. Distilling the wisdom of the past and present-day, she makes perfectly clear the meaning of now, so the future can take care of itself. Eng reveals that the mysterious conductor of our life’s orchestra is the Universe, and when we let ourselfexperience its inherent harmonies, we realize the complete freedom that already exists.” –Susannah Sanfilippo, Certified Yoga Instructor and MindBody Educator

“The Myth of Doing shatters the illusion of free will. Rather than discouraging us with this awareness, Eng presents an alternative vision that allows us to access inner peace and clarity.” –Maxine Sclar, Clinical Social Worker

“Eng’s work raises the questions: What if one could truly walk in another’s shoes? Would one, being that person, act otherwise than he or she acts? Could one act differently? The Myth of Doing teaches us that if we want to know ourselves, we must look only to the present moment. Know thyself. Read this book!” -Christopher Miller, Writer

These testimonials are wonderful and show us, readers, that Jill Eng’s work appeals to many different people from all walks of life. Because Eng is such a gifted woman who knows how to inspire people, I have no choice than to award The Myth of Doing a dazzling Five Stars! Her book is sensational!

Aimee Ann, I am very grateful for your reception of my book and most pleased that you perceive it to be “accessible to everybody.” This is my primary goal as for me it is about how we all struggle emotionally/psychologically from the pressures we feel to live our lives correctly and successfully. We are each up against our own inner beliefs about what we should and should not be doing in our lives which can cause a lot of inner strain, frustration, anxiety and sadness. I try to point out the simplicity that what we all do in every aspect… Read more »
