Nothing is as it seems and Frankie soon finds herself sucked into the tangled and seemingly supernatural mystery. Because the people acting strangely, the people killing everyone around her are haunting the mirrors. Now Frankie’s own reflection is behaving strangely and seems hellbent on causing her harm.

Monstrous is the first book in the Blood of Cain series written by J.L. Murray and wow! I am hooked already. To be honest, I found myself captivated before even reading the book thanks to the dramatic description that piqued my interested, but when I started to read the story and the amount of depth and imagination that went into it I was sold and knew that I would now have to read the rest of the series. For a series to be successful the author in question has to hook the reader right away and Murray has certainly done this with me. That is why I have to recommend this book to all of you lovely readers but if you need more convincing then read the rest of my review to learn out more about this haunting but stellar read!

Monstrous is a multi-layered novel with a lot of storylines laced throughout the book and they all revolve around the protagonist of the story, Frankie Mourning. It is hard to discuss Frankie without spoiling the book; however, I will try to do so in a non-spoilery way! The reader will follow Frankie on her tumultuous life in which she has witnessed much tragedy; however, Frankie has also committed many acts herself because she has been ‘tasked with killing the killers’, why? Well, I can’t spoil that book lovers but what I will mention is that in her hometown of Helmville Montana, ‘people are dying at an alarming and the sheriff is ruling them all accidents and suicides.’ The reader will follow Frankie during this puzzling mystery, but it will not be a smooth journey because she will soon find herself entangled in a terrifying supernatural mystery. Frankie will embark on this mission and will be accompanied by a murderous former detective called Thomas Dekker, and together the pair will team up and embark on the mission together, and this book lovers is the premise of the thrilling Monstrous.

The story of Monstrous is an excellent one that had my mind ticking over with theories. At the heart of the novel is a puzzling mystery, the mystery slowly reveals itself and when it does readers will be shocked as well as terrified. Never before have I been so entertained by a supernatural based novel, usually these books can be so outlandish that I stop reading but not with Monstrous, somehow the author splendid author J.L. Murray managed to convince me that the events could be real and that I should be terrified. It is always a good sign when an author can make fantasy seem real, and that is just one of the many reasons why I love Murray’s literature and why I will always read her books from now on.

J.L. Murray is an author who deserves praise for her many writing abilities, I believe however that she should receive the most recognition for her glorious descriptions that left no stone unturned. The descriptions courtesy of Murray is so well described that it could give readers nightmares. Every single detail was excellently described, and so was the local surroundings. The surroundings in the book were equally well described, so much so that Murray managed to create an atmosphere of tension and suspense through it which added to the overall excellence of the story.

Overall Monstrous is a stellar, haunting and gripping novel that will keep readers entertained and thrilled until the very end and that is why book lovers that I have to award the story five stars!

Thanks so much for your review, Aimee! Monstrous is one of my books that I’m particularly proud of. I grew up in a rural community in Montana much like the town in the book, and it was so much fun to finally be able to mesh my upbringing into a dark fantasy/horror novel. The sequel, Hoarfrost, is set on the Oregon coast, where I’ve also spent a lot of time. So if you enjoy Monstrous, please do check out Hoarfrost. I’m currently working on the third novel, Sanguine, which is set in Idaho, and which will be available this Fall.… Read more »
