Maid of Baikal: A Novel of the Russian Civil War, Preston Fleming

Action & Adventure, Historical Fiction, Literature & Fiction, Military Fiction

In a quiet town near Siberia’s Lake Baikal, Zhanna Dorokhina turns eighteen as the Russian Civil War rages. She is a bright, headstrong girl, with normal hopes and dreams, but for years, she has heard inner voices. The voices tell her to be virtuous, study well, and nurture her faith, for a great task lies ahead.
Lately, however, the voices have turned ominous, foretelling Russia’s doom if the White Armies fail to crush the Bolshevik usurpers in Moscow. They direct Zhanna to travel to Omsk to alert the Siberian dictator, Admiral Kolchak, and to seek command of an army to besiege Moscow.

When Zhanna informs her father, he thinks her mad. But a young American intelligence officer and his Russian counterpart help win her an audience with the Admiral, and the two young men become her wartime companions.

Though Zhanna and the American officer harbor tender feelings for one another, Zhanna must put those feelings aside, because her voices demand that she remain pure.

During the coming months, Zhanna persists despite relentless opposition. Displaying remarkable charisma and military aptitude, she leads her army across vast expanses of untamed forest and steppe, where suffering, violence and treachery await at every turn.

But over time, Zhanna’s obsession with victory arouses powerful enemies. Defying a ceasefire, Zhanna wins her greatest battle, only to ride into a Bolshevik ambush soon after. Held captive, she must endure a vengeful show trial and face the verdict alone, without knowing whether her prophecies will be fulfilled.

Maid of Baikal: A Novel of the Russian Civil War is an alternative history book that will take the reader to Russia between the years of 1914 to 1918. Maid of Baikal is unique for many reasons but the core reason it is unique is thanks to the unique but immersive look at the Russian Civil War. I have struggled to discover a novel that does just this but Preston Fleming, the incredible author of Maid of Baikal has provided just this and has put a fantastic and entertaining twist on history. If you are a reader who adores to read a comprehensive book that is detailed but also incredibly entertaining full of many characters who are well-developed, then Maid of Baikal should be your next read as it is genuinely brilliant.

Maid of Baikal is a dense novel, just over five hundred pages long which follows many plot avenues however the core focus of the story is the Russian Civil War. The reader early on in the story will be introduced to a young American captain in Russia on his journey to uncover intelligence that will be crucial for Allies. Along the way, the captain will encounter many core characters however one of these is a young maiden called Zhanna and she is no ordinary maiden or woman because she hears voices from God and these voices she hears instruct her to help the Civil War. The reader will follow the American captain and Zhanna on their journey across Russia in their fight, and this book lovers is the premise of the unforgettable Maid of Baikal.

The story of Maid of Baikal is an intriguing one for many reasons such as the history explored, the enigmatic and notable characters as well as the incredible, detailed military strategies laced throughout the book. If you are a military buff like me who adores knowing of military tactics and strategic plans, then you will love Maid of Baikal because plenty of this is explored throughout the book. The reader will get a real sense of what military tactics were like at the beginning of the 19th century and how these plans unfolded and whether they were in fact successful. I believe the inclusion of this by Preston Fleming was a phenomenal plot device because it not only entertains the reader but informs them, so much so that the reader will be able to take away knowledge from the book and discuss it with their friends.

The story is not only brilliant for the in-depth military descriptions, but the book is also great thanks to the wealth of information explored. I should mention at this point that Maid of Baikal is fiction, it is however inspired by real historical events and people throughout history. In the book, Zhanna could be compared to Joan of Ark, so if you have an interest in Joan of Ark or similar people throughout history then Maid of Baikal will be your dream novel.

Preston Fleming is the author of Maid of Baikal and I admit that I am gutted I have not discovered his work sooner, I have always dreamed of reading such a book because I love history but sadly I have not encountered a great historical book in a while. When I read the description of Maid of Baikal I knew instantly that I would adore the story and now that I have finished the book I can honestly write that I loved it and this is all thanks to Fleming.

Preston Fleming has managed to accomplish the almost impossible, he has managed to write a historical fiction novel entertainingly! I have read a lot of historical fiction novels that end up becoming history books full of too much information but Fleming has mastered the balance between history and entertainment and has weaved the two perfectly together, and so I applaud him for this and his talent.

As Maid of Baikal is a unique and refreshing book that will delight and excite its readers from page one I, of course, have to award the sensational book five stars! I was delighted to discover Aimee Ann’s review of my novel, MAID OF BAIKAL, not just because she praised the book but because she brought such a fruitful perspective to it. An author can’t help but be pleased when a reader comes equipped with both an interest in and a familiarity with the subject matter, in this case, military history. Events of the pre-WWII era are sadly unfamiliar to most Americans. Few Americans, even in our older generations, are aware that the U.S. sent some 8,000 troops to Siberia in 1918 to help guard the Trans-Siberian Railway. In MAID OF… Read more »
