Little Miss Sure Shot, Jeffrey Marshall

Action & Adventure, Historical Fiction, Literature & Fiction

Little Miss Sure Shot is a fictionalized account of the life of Annie Oakley, drawing heavily on the real timelines and events of her life. However, the book is not a biography – it invents situations, people she meets, and a myriad of conversations. Moreover, while the book is presented chronologically, apart from the prologue, it skips certain periods and attempts to focus on those that are especially vital, such as the early years Annie spent with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, including the tours through Europe.

A special feature of the novel is the framing of Annie’s loving marriage to fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler, whom she married at sixteen and remained married to for 50 years until her death. Frank was far more than just her husband – he was her manager (he gave up his own shooting for that role) and her constant companion.

The novel closes with an epilogue in Frank’s voice, presenting an overview of their lives together and the circumstances of her death in 1926.

Little Miss Sure Shot is a unique, exceptional and entertaining historical fiction novel that is based on a real figure in history, Annie Oakley. For those of you that do not know who Annie Oakley was, she was a woman born in the late 18th century who became a sharpshooter for the entertainment of others, she is a person in history who many will know about, especially if you love the wild west! But not everybody does, so that is why Little Miss Sure Shot is an exceptional novel courtesy of Jeffrey Marshall because it informs readers about a notable figure that all readers should know about. Little Miss Sure Shot is based on a real woman in history; however, it is a fictionalized account of Annie’s life, but the majority of the book is laced with actual facts about her life, career and her husband, Frank Butler. If you are a sucker for history and love anything western, then continue reading to learn more about the novel!

Little Miss Sure Shot follows the star of the novel, Annie Oakley, a sharpshooter but before this, she was a poor girl living in Ohio. Annie from a young age experienced many hardships, being poor is one of them but so is a loss as at the tender age of six because at this age, she lost her father. Annie however, being a strong, determined young girl continued on, and she learned to shoot to support her family and well, let’s just say she had an exceptional talent for shooting! Before she was even a teenager, she was competing with men in shooting competitions; it is at one of these competitions that she met the soon to be love of her life, Frank Butler. Frank and Annie soon became close, and they teamed up, performing together, and soon the spotlight started to shine on Annie thanks to her incredible talents. When it did, Frank accepted that she was the star, not him, so he became Annie’s manager instead of shooting partner. Together Frank and Annie would tour and make memories along the way, their lives together were full of excitement and adventure, and the readers will follow them on this journey which the author Jefferey Marshall so flawlessly writes.

The story laced throughout Little Miss Sure Shot is breathtaking as well as mesmerizing. I love historical fiction and westerns in general so I always knew I would love Little Miss Sure Shot and I admit, I had high expectations before even reading the book so you can imagine my surprise when I started to read the book and find that the book exceeded my expectations! Marshall floored me with his exceptional ability to write a fictional story around a real figure in history, this is hard to do, and although the book is full of fiction, it still has a lot of facts so I applaud Marshall for his research and ability to weave a story around such research.

Jerffery Marshall has many talents as a writer but his core talent I believe is his descriptive powers. The explanatory powers courtesy of Marshall is exceptional, so much so that the reader will be able to imagine them in the 18th century. A key feature of a successful historical fiction novel is the feeling of being transported to another decade or even century and Marshall definitely accomplished this with his phenomenal ability to transport me.

As Little Miss Sure Shot is an entertaining, exciting and informative book that will delight, charm, inspire and even inform readers on an exceptional woman, I, of course, have to award the book five stars! So please book lovers, if you are looking to get lost in a historical fiction tale based on true events then Little Miss Sure Shot is for you!
