Life of a Bastard Vol.1, Damien Black

Abuse & Substance Abuse, Memoir & Biography, NonFiction, Parenting & Relationships

Born in Spanish Harlem in 1972 to a teenage Puerto Rican mother and a Black father, Javier Soto is a blemish on the face of American society.  After a suspicious fire allegedly set by his mother, while his father serves time in prison, Javier and his sisters are removed from their home into foster care. This true story of Javier Soto’s life takes you on the soul-stirring journey of a young boy in the custody of a brutal world.

Beginning at the Catholic Home Bureau, Javier’s tale depicts the evolution of an innocent child into an enraged teenager as he battles his way through the perils of abuse, starvation and neglect. Like thousands of American children who are driven into the foster care network Javier and his siblings are repeatedly shuffled through numerous foster homes, each one less welcoming than the last. Following eventual separation from his sisters, Javier is left to continue his crusade of survival alone.

An indelible account that tells of a boy’s anguish, self-loathing and an unsatisfied yearning for love that is the birthright of every child. With such little grounds for hope, how far will Javier go?

Life of a Bastard Vol.1 is an emotional, moving, poignant tale that needs to be read by everybody. Damien Black is the author of this story, but he writes it on behalf of Javier Soto, the focus of this book and his life and the abuse he endured growing up in the foster system. The story of this book is hard-hitting at times and could be distressing for anybody that has experienced any kind of abuse; however Life of a Bastard is not an oppressively dark novel, it has tough moments which will make the reader feel a host of different emotions, but mostly it is an inspiring tale which has been written to bring awareness to a troubling issue that needs to be fixed.

Javier Soto is the focus of Life of a Bastard, Damien Black effortlessly writes his story, and I admire him for doing so. Javier Soto was born in 1972 in the Spanish Harlem and is the son of a Puerto Rican mother and a Black father. Without spoiling the event that changes the course of life for Javier, a fire breaks out, and his father is put in jail and Javier, and his sisters are soon removed from their home and into foster care. Javier’s first house is at the Catholic Home Bureau, and Javier’s tale takes him from being an innocent child to a teenager who experiences many brutal events. Javier is abused, starved, and neglected by many foster care homes. This is Javier’s story, and it is moving as well as significant.

The life of Javier Soto is an eye-opening one which will open many readers eyes to the harsh realities many foster care children experience. His story is incredibly brave, and I admire him for telling it, and I admire Damien Black for writing his story in a sensitive, informative way which will evoke change in many people.

Damien Black is a fantastic author, his superb writing will captivate and enthrall his readers from the very first page. I adore the reasons he has written this book, his reasons are written on his Amazon author page and this is part of what he wrote.

“In writing the story of Javier Soto, he wishes to capture the essence of life in foster care and to expose the raw truths of the struggle for identity and the shocking violence inflicted on these abandoned children. He hopes that the series will increase awareness among readers and allow them to comprehend and empathize with each of the 20,000 children that leave the foster system every year in the United States of America.”

The text I just wrote that is written on Damien Blacks author page is sensational and admirable, I admire his reasons for writing this story and hope that it will inspire many people to encourage change in the foster system as well as empathize with those that lived and are living in it.

As Life of a Bastard is such a moving, poignant book, I have no choice but to award this book a stunning Five Stars as it needs to be read and loved by everybody.
