Leap Year: Be Scared…Be Very Scared, Daniel M. Warloch

Children & Picture Book, Fantasy, Literature & Fiction, Middle Grade Fiction

Jordan, James and Thomas Waldron are three brothers who explore an old abandoned hall, only to find themselves trapped in time! When the clock strikes midnight on February 28th, the boys discover they’ve been transported to a leap year in the past. Terrifying adventures and unusual characters await the trio as they become separated within the rooms of the creepy old hall.

In order to get back to the present, the brothers must use their wits to solve a complicated riddle—or face the possibility of being trapped in the hall until the next leap year! Will they be able to overcome the shocking surprises they encounter? Is the riddle likely to be solved, or will the brothers face more hurdles in their quest to return to their present-day lives? This is usually the book description from the back cover.

A short while ago I read and reviewed an incredible book from a new found author of mine; Daniel M. Warloch. The book is called The Key to Survival and it is an epic action-adventure tale that thrusts the reader back in time to the 19th Century aboard the Titanic. The story was exceptional, brilliant and fascinating and a story my children loved! So of course, it is no surprise that I was desperate to get my hands on Warloch’s first book, Leap Year: Be Scared… Be Very Scared. I was eager to read this book and have my children read it but I admit, I was worried that it would not live up to my high expectations after the excellence of The Key to Survival! However book lovers, this fear did not last long because within just a few pages I was hooked and so were my children and I knew from then that I would love every moment of the book and love it I did!

Leap Year: Be Scared… Be Very Scared is an intriguing novel that follows three brothers. Jordan, James and Thomas Waldron who one day find themselves exploring an abandoned hall for an impromptu adventure and although they were looking to have fun, never did they expect to find themselves traveling through time! The three boys will be thrust through time back to a leap year, once there the three brothers will have to find a way to go back home before it is too late. Time will be against the boys because if they are there too long, then they could be stuck in a leap year forever! Follow the hilarious brothers on their journey through time as they encounter strange characters, and experience many thrilling, dangerous moments. Your children will love this story, I know that mine did so I have to recommend this to all the fellow parents out there who are looking for a remarkable story for their children to be captivated by!

The story of Leap Year is one what charmed me; the premise of the story involving three brothers on a dangerous but exciting mission was adorable to me. The relationship between these three brothers is one that will warm parents hearts and thrill young children. I believe that the relationship between these three brothers is what propels the story forward, their bond and friendship and brotherly antics with each other is what makes this book so unique and what makes it memorable.

The theme of time travel is a core theme in Daniel M. Warloch’s literature and I admit, he is excellent at lacing this theme throughout his stories! Some authors have a particular talent and Warloch’s is a talent to transport his readers to a different time and a different place… which is an incredible talent to accomplish because many author’s struggles with this. Instead, Warloch has perfected this and because he has, the reader will be captivated and sucked into the story even more.

Once again Daniel M. Warloch’s writing is sensational, his captivating writing combined with his flawless narration and excellent characterization of the three brothers will engross the reader for hours on end. My children loved this story and I truly believe it was down to these three factors. Warloch truly is an exceptional talent and so, as Leap Year is just as addictive and wonderful as The Key to Survival, I have no choice but to award this stunning piece of fiction five stars!
