K.C. Reinstadler, Author Spotlight

Author Spotlight

A suspense-filled, true-to-life police drama, Slice of Greed follows Detective Kevin Rhinehardt as he works a double murder case involving a doctor, his homosexual lover, and a mysterious killer on the loose along California’s Central Coast.

Detective Rhinehardt is an experienced criminal investigator with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office. But Solvang, California, doesn’t experience much violent crime, so the early morning call to the scene has his stomach in a knot. It doesn’t help matters that he didn’t get much sleep, his new normal: too many bad dreams.

Drawing from his personal experiences as a criminal investigator, author K. C. Reinstadler takes you inside the mind of a dedicated detective with his own inner demons to overcome while working the difficult case—only to come up empty-handed. Dubbed “the Phantom,” the killer has been careful to leave no physical evidence behind—and Rhinehardt has no leads.

Under pressure from a terrorized community, an antagonistic TV news team, and a tyrannical boss, the colorful detective team must use every investigative trick in the book to get a break in the case. But when they finally do, it opens up a bigger can of worms than anyone imagined!

Thank you for joining us today at Red Headed Book Lover! Please tell us more about yourself.

I retired from the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department in 2005, and since then worked for a while with Homeland Security.  I didn’t like working for the Federal Government, so I left after only a year (too much red tape, too little action).  I moved out of California in 2017 to Northern Arizona, and we love it here!  I am an avid Scuba Diver, and although I no longer instruct, my wife and I and various other dive buddies have dove throughout the world!  I enjoy off the road exploring, RV travel and Harley riding.

It is so incredible that you love scuba diving! It must be so amazing to dive all over you’re your friends and wife. Could you please tell us readers about your work and what inspired you to write your novels?

My books are inspired, so far, by real-life events. Criminal cases that I have been involved with.  This particular book, Hot Bits… Cold Steel, was inspired by my arrest of an actual safecracker in California in the mid-nineties.  It was an interesting case, involving multiple crimes up and down the State of California.  He was the only crook actually drilling open safes in America at the time!

It is fascinating that you have taken real-life cases you have been involved with and applied it to your work; it certainly shows and makes your work even more gripping! What would your advice be for aspiring writers?

My advice for would-be writers… just do it!  I encourage you to dig deep into your own experiences for inspiration!

That is wonderful advice! Thank you. In your opinion, what is the most important thing about a book?

The most important thing for me is character and plot development.  It must keep the reader anticipating what happens next, and wanting to buy your next book.

Yes! My favorite type of book to read is one that will keep me guessing from beginning to end so I could not agree more. What is your writing process like?

When I start a project, I treat it like a job.  I first envision the plot, and then develop an outline to follow. Keeping track of the characters you develop is also very important.  Little details can get away from you as your story unfolds, and if you deviate from an earlier detail in your manuscript, readers always catch it!

Thank you for sharing this! What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

My trilogy is based on events I was already very familiar with, but I obviously fictionalized details and characters to avoid ending up in court!  They required little research; only verifying certain details I needed for authenticity.  I am contemplating a true-life novel next, which will take travel, and multiple interviews to complete.  That novel will take time!

A true live novel would be incredible! I can already imagine it and think that it would be wonderful. Do you have a set schedule for writing, or do you only write when you feel inspired?

I started my first book, because of constant nagging on the part of my wife, relatives, and friends.  I would relate many of the interesting crime cases I had been involved with in conversations, and frankly, I got so tired of hearing the same old line; “You should write a book!”  Subsequently, my first novel, Slice of Greed, was written over a four-month period in latter 2015.  I had no plan; it just came to me.  Subsequently, I went through multiple re-writes to finish it.  Then, when readers loved it, I got the writing bug!  Now, I plan out a book,  diagram it on paper and my mind, and treat writing it as a 6-8 hour a day job, Monday through Friday.  I always take the weekends off.  It clears my head, and saves my marriage!

Making time for your partner is always so important, so I love how you make sure you do while also pursuing your passion, that is such a wonderful balance! Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I used to read a lot.  Horrors from Kuntz and King, and then got into crime novels from Grisham and Patterson.  Since I began writing myself, I haven’t read other’s work.  I know, it’s weird!  I will tell you that when I see a movie, I always critique the plot and endings.  You can sure tell when a screenwriter hurries one to satisfy his producers!

I have heard from many authors who think this way! It would be hard to read a book or watch a movie without wanting to critique the plot and endings! Lastly, when can we readers expect to read more wonderful books from you?

Currently, I am trying to market my three books.  It’s a matter of economics presently.  I do have a new work in mind…  but being an Indie book writer isn’t for the faint of heart or lean of pocketbook!  Feel free to contact me through my website:
