Jodie and the Library Card, Julie Hodgson

Action & Adventure, Children & Picture Book, Literature & Fiction, Middle Grade Fiction, Teen & Young Adult, Time Travel Fiction

Jodie Broom, a 12-year-old girl (almost 13!), is like most girls her age. She loves her friends, music, and is always up for a good adventure. What she treasures above all else are books and she is consumed by them, reading and collecting whatever she can to satisfy her voracious appetite for stories, facts, and history. But Jodie lives in the year 2075, and more than fifty years have passed since the banning of books and paper; it’s a time when no one can own a printed book, or even print photographs. In this E-world, experiences are largely simulated, from the reconstituted food to the zoo that only shows films of all the extinct species. With her student library card, which gives her the ability to time travel, Jodie discovers that she and her friends can experience historical events and meet legendary characters, and can also find and bring home her precious books to keep safe in her secret hiding place.

Jodie and the Library Card is the perfect children’s book that I wish I had read when I was younger. The story laced throughout this stunning read is quite simply perfect and the kind of children’s book I have always dreamed of. When I discovered Jodie and the Library Card and read the premise, I knew that I would have to read it as well as read it with my children as the premise of the story holds many themes that are beautiful. Jodie and the Library Card truly is a fantastic read and I would implore all of you lovely parents to buy this for your children but if you need more convincing then please do read the rest of my review!

Jodie and the Library Card follows the twelve-year-old protagonist of the story, Jodie Broom, who lives in the future… the year 2075 to be precise! Jodie lives in a world which technological advancements are everywhere and one of these advancements is that books and paper are no longer allowed and if you get found with either, you will be punished. The harsh rule means that 2075 is an ‘E-World’ in which mostly everything is processed by technology.

Jodie is a young girl who loves nothing more than to get lost in a great book so you can imagine her distaste for the almost fifty-year-old rule of no books! However, Jodie’s luck soon one day changes as she is given a library card. The library card is not just a regular one as it, in fact, is magical and has the ability of time travel. The reader will follow Jodie as she travels through time and gets to experience what the world was like before technology took over. Jodie will go on many adventures as well as pick up many books… real books! Along the way and this book lovers it the premise of this beautiful read.

The tale of Jodie and the Library Card is an incredible one that weaves themes of action and adventure with themes of technology and how it stifles human interaction. I adore the premise of the story which follows a young girl and her love of reading because my oldest children also love reading and so they loved Jodie right away! What I loved about the story was the fact that the author, Julie Hodgson stresses the importance of a real book! Of course, e-readers can be handy, but I love how she explores that real paper books will most likely be a thing of the past in decades to come so I admire her for exploring this.

Julie Hodgson is a fantastic writer for many reasons but the two primary reasons are 1) she has created a fantastic protagonist and an incredible story and 2) she has managed to write her book in a flawless, entertaining and captivating way. The writing throughout this book is that of a true wordsmith and storyteller. The imagination as well as the creativity laced throughout Jodie and the Library Card is remarkable and will have readers turning the pages all night. As Jodie and the Library Card is a wonderful, mesmerizing and captivating story I have no choice but to award this incredible book five stars!
