Italy Invades, full of restless adventurers, canny generals, and the occasional scoundrel, is a fast-paced and compelling read, the perfect sequel to America Invades.
Recreating their success with America Invades, Christopher Kelly and Stuart Laycock take another global tour, this time starting from Italy and exploring that country’s military involvements throughout the ancient and modern worlds. From the empire building of the Romans, through the globe-spanning Age of Exploration, to the multinational cooperation of NATO, Italy has conquered and explored countries as diverse and far-ranging as Cape Verde and Mongolia and Uruguay. With the additional guide of maps and photographs, the reader can visually follow the Italians as they conquer the world.
The book also contains an excerpt from the never before published An Adventure in 1914, written by Christopher Kelly’s maternal great-grandfather, Thomas Tileston Wells. Wells served as the American consul general to Romania each summer; and in the summer of 1914, as war exploded across Europe, he was there with his wife and two children.
Italy Invades is the third book I have read (and now reviewed) by Christopher Kelly and Stuart Laycock, and upon finishing it, I thought to myself “can this writing duo’s books get any better?!”. When I finished reading Italy Invades as well as while I was reading it, I was incredibly impressed with the high standard of writing and accurate and diverse history they have once again laced throughout their book. Italy Invades is slightly different to Kelly’s and Laycock’s previous two books because Italy Invades takes us readers from America to Italy and while there Kelly and Laycock together will explore Italy’s military involvements throughout the world and through key historical events. If you are a reader who adores military history, then have a read of Italy Invades, as well as America Invaded, and America Invades which are two books that are also written by Kelly and Laycock and they are just as sensational as Italy Invades!
Italy Invades will take the reader on a journey throughout history, with a focus on Italy’s military history and how they conquered the majority of the world, especially in the Ancient world when the Romans were building their empire. Throughout the book Italy Invades will take its readers on an expansive journey, starting in Ancient times focusing on the Romans and how they conquered and controlled a lot of lands. The reader will then be taken to the Age of Exploration and then to more modern times and throughout this journey, many fascinating facts and moments in history are shared. The history and facts are paired with maps and photographs which will, in turn, give the reader an immersive, visually stunning experience that they will not forget for a long time.
Once again Christopher Kelly and Stuart Laycock impressed me with the wealth of information they laced throughout the book. The amount of research Kelly and Laycock have laced throughout Italy Invades is impressive, and it must have taken them months, so they really do deserve praise for their hard work and dedication to sharing Italy’s history with the world in Italy Invades.
Christopher Kelly and Stuart Laycock are an excellent author duo whose literature perfectly compliments each other. What I love about the author’s literature is how wonderfully it flows throughout and how easy it is to read. I have mentioned this briefly before in another review of mine for their work, but to write an easily readable historical piece of nonfiction is difficult. This is because the book needs to captivate and enthrall readers without ever boring them and Kelly and Laycock never bore their readers and this is thanks to the imagination and intriguing depth they have laced throughout their book.
Overall Italy Invades is another brilliant book courtesy of authors Kelly and Laycock and if you are a reader who wishes to learn more about Italy’s history and how they conquered a lot of land all over the world and how they did it, then please do have a read of this book as you will not regret it! Italy Invades, of course, gets five stars from me! Also, I should mention that Italy Invades has now been translated into Italian so if you are Italian then you now have a copy to read!
