In this delightful coming-of-age memoir, Rich Israel takes off on a journey of self-discovery during the late 1960s. Eschewing societal norms, he hitchhikes across the country, tries his hand at mining, works at a circus, and rides a horse hundreds of miles through the Rocky Mountain wilderness–all the while, the draft and Vietnam War are nipping at his heels.
Join Rich and his canine companion, Charlie, as they encounter one colorful character after another, from a rifle-toting hippie to a loudmouthed carnival boss to a sultry flower child, whose bewitching powers lead to lust and longing–and heartbreak. A consummate storyteller, Rich peppers his writing with wit and sensitivity, as well as insights often revealed through mind-blowing acid trips.
If you were there during this unique period in American history, Groovin’ is certain to spark treasured memories. If not, you will get to enjoy the flavor and exhilaration associated with catching that phenomenal wave.
Memoirs with a travel theme are my favorite type of books to read. I adore memoirs because they give the reader insight into a person’s fascinating life. In particular, I love memoirs with travel themes because the reader is whisked away on a journey and if the author of such a biography is brilliantly descriptive about the places he and or she visits, the reader will feel as if they are right there experiencing every moment the author is. Groovin’: Horses, Hopes, and Slippery Slopes written by the extraordinary Rich Israel is just this type of read; it is an incredibly powerful travel memoir that whisks the reader away on a journey through 1960’s America. The reader thanks to the author’s impeccable descriptions will feel as if they are right there so already I would have to implore you lovely readers to have a read of Groovin!
Groovin is a travel memoir that will take its readers on a moving and memorable journey across the vast expanse of America. The author’s story of his journey is incredible and unlike anything, I have read before. I have read a lot of travel memoirs as it is a genre I adore however Groovin stands out amongst the genre and is now one of my favorite travel memoirs of all time thanks to the sensational story and compelling literature. Never before have I been so enchanted by a memoir but the author and narrator of his own story, Rich Israel managed to compel me from the very start thanks to his honest and captivating writing. If you are a reader who adores travel memoirs or memoirs, in general then Groovin is for you as it is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
Groovin will take the readers on an incredible journey through the 1960’s and will introduce the reader to the star of the book and the narrator, Rich Israel who takes his readers on his journey of self-discovery. Rich throughout the book has many adventures and some of them include working in a mine, a circus, however, he also rode a horse through the Rocky Mountains for many miles and what he learned along the way is eye-opening.
The profoundness in Groovin is sensational, and many readers will feel a host of different emotions while reading this book. Rich effortlessly inspires thoughts and feelings in his readers as well as compel them to read from beginning to end. I found myself reading Groovin at an alarming rate because it was captivating as well as engrossing; his incredible literature will have you turning the pages frantically, and I adored how he was able to do this. As well as Rich writing his novel in an incredibly compelling way, he also is excellent at describing the settings and places in this book. His beautiful descriptive writing of America and in particular the Rocky Mountains will make the reader feel as if you are right there, this is how I felt, and because I did, I felt as if I was with Rich on his journey of discovery and that for me was incredibly wonderful.
Rich Israel is an incredible man who I admire so much, there is much I admire about Rich but one of the core attributes I admire about him is the fact that he has told his story. Literature is an art form and it is there for stories to be told and shared and stories like Rich’s should definitely be shared thanks to the inspiring nature of it. Rich set out on a journey and his grit and determination made him succeed in his travels and this speaks volumes about his character. Rich flawlessly narrates his story in a brazen, honest and inspiring way, the journey is tough at times but mostly the story is inspiring because it shows us, readers, that anything can happen as long as you have the will and determination.
Not only is Rich a wonderful man for sharing his story but he is also exceptional for his beautiful literature laced throughout his memoir. Travel memoirs only work in my opinion if the writing is honest as well as descriptive and Groovin is most certainly this. Rich has described his story perfectly, and the descriptions of the places he encounters are breath-taking; Rich will describe them so excellently that the reader will be able to feel as if they are right there, with Rich and his pet dog Charlie on their adventure across America. Rich is an author who is clearly passionate about the reader’s experience and in his book he ensures that his reader is entertained from beginning to end and he does this by honestly telling his story as well as making them feel welcome and included in the book.
As Groovin is a remarkable, memorable and compelling piece of nonfiction I am going to award this book five stars. If you are a reader who adores travel memoirs then do read this book as the story between its pages will entertain you for many days and nights.
