RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

Gran’paul’s Family, Karl Larew

Espionage & Conspiracy, Family Saga, Historical Fiction, Literature & Fiction, Military Fiction

This final volume in the trilogy, “Paul’s Three Wars,” sees Paul and Betty moving into retirement, closing his Army career and her musical career, during the 1960s. Meanwhile, the focus turns to their son, Danny; Betty’s daughter, Rosalie; and Paul’s nephew, Teddy. The family must deal with failed marriages and new loves; Rosalie’s musical career; Teddy’s military service and his investigation of a case of Soviet espionage; fears of homosexuality; and the Vietnamese War. Danny’s role in the anti-war movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s threatens to tear the family apart.

Gran’paul’s Family is the final book in a three-part series called Paul’s Three Wars written by the phenomenal talent, Karl Larew. The first two books in the series are named Paul, Betty and Pearl and DaddyPaul and the Yo-yo War; these two books were the perfect historical fiction, military based reads as they entertained me for many hours as well as charmed me thanks to Larew’s incredible writing ability. I admit that when I started to read Gran’paul’s Family, I was hesitant as I have grown to love the series and the characters within the stories and did not want to say goodbye. I was also reluctant to fully immerse myself in the story as I was worried it would not live up to my high expectations. However, now that I have finished reading Gran’paul’s Family I can happily write that the last book exceeded my expectations and this is thanks to the talent of Karl Larew.

Gran’paul’s Family once again reunites the reader with much-loved characters; the reader will be reunited with Paul and Betty, and I have to admit that I always look forward to being reunited with them! Paul and Betty are now approaching retirement, and the book focuses on them and their retirement as well as a few core members of the family. The reader will follow Paul and Betty’s son, Danny, Betty’s daughter Rosalie and Paul’s nephew, Teddy. Karl Larew explores many poignant themes through these five characters, themes such as war, espionage, homosexuality, marriage, and love. The result of this is a glorious, epic finale that will charm and entertain readers for many hours.

Karl Larew is a genius writer who has managed to once again entertain me with his epic historical fiction novel. It is very rare for a three-part series to be so incredible from beginning to end but each book was just as phenomenal as the last, and that is all because of Larew’s talent to entertain and delight his readers. Karl Larew is a retired history professor who specializes in military history, so it is no surprise that his series includes accurate, informative and entertaining military themes. Larew’s series is almost like an educational lesson as throughout the first two books and Gran’paul’s Family, the reader is informed on many military facts as well as what the era’s explored throughout the books are like. I mention all of this because without Larew and his extensive knowledge the series would not be as brilliant as it is and so readers have a lot to thank Larew for.

As Karl Larew’s final book is an incredible, moving and unforgettable book and so I am going to award Gran’paul’s Family a dazzling five stars. If you are a reader who loves historical fiction as well as family sagas or military fiction then Paul’s Three Wars the series is for you so please, do not miss out on the opportunity of reading this phenomenal series! Again, my thanks to Aimee for a very gratifying review. Yes, it was sad to say goodbye to the characters in this book–sad for me as well as (see Aimee’s remarks) for her. The “Greatest Generation” and its successor generation, went through a lot, even those of us who never got sent to a war zone–except the culture wars that occurred in families and college campuses here at home. Aimee has captured that history, albeit a fictionalized story in my three books.
