The smell was bad enough to curl the hairs in your nose — a combination of hot dust, hot bodies, hot excrement, dead fish, dead animals and dead dreams. Pastè Daniel stood in the pile of debris that had once been his church and shook his head. Merde, he thought. How on earth am I going to fix this mess? –from Ezkeel in Cite Soleil Vodou priest Daniel Dal has left his mountainside village to start a combination Christian church/Vodou temple in the slum of Cite Soleil. His personal Vodou spirit, or lwa, has convinced him that the two religions are the same thing, and if he downplays the Vodou side he can get monetary support from American churches. Daniel doesn’t know, however, that his personal lwa, Ezkeel, is actually a demon, an ancient fallen angel, intent on causing mischief. What will the outcome be?
Ezkeel in Cite Soleil is a remarkable, fascinating and addictive read that managed to entertain me for many hours on end thanks to the unique premise of the story that features a demon and a priest as well as the excellent literature courtesy of David Thatcher Wilson. Ezkeel in Cite Soleil has fast become one of my favorite reads of the year and throughout my review I will explain just why this is, but in short, it is because the story is sensational! Very rarely do I discover a book that captivates me as fast as Ezkeel in Cite Soleil has so the fact that I am so taken with this book shows you readers that this book indeed is incredible and not to be missed!
Ezkeel in Cite Soleil follows the protagonist of the novel, Daniel Dal, a Vodou priest who has combined Christianity with Vodou and created a temple for both in the Cite Soleil. Daniel Dal is not your average priest as he has a personal Vodou spirit, a spirit which has managed to convince Daniel that the Christianity and Vodou are the same. However, what Daniel does not know is that his personal Vodou spirit is actually a sinister and evil demon called Ezkeel who is determined to cause as much destruction as possible and wreak havoc on many people.
The story of Ezkeel in Cite Soleil is utterly brilliant, original and highly creative. I am a sucker for any book that features demons, angels, and religion, especially after watching the hit tv show Lucifer so when I discovered this book I knew that I had to read it and review it for you lovely readers. When I started to read Ezkeel in Cite Soleil I was soon astounded by the wealth of information laced between the pages and the vivid descriptions which perfectly placed me in the thick of the story amongst the drama. I was in a frenzy as I turned the pages because I so desperately wanted to know what was going to happen to the protagonist of the story and what Ezkeel’s mischevious plans were.
David Thatcher Wilson is the well-accomplished author of Ezkeel in Cite Soleil and his brilliant prose, as well as his creativity, needs to be applauded by both writers and readers alike as he has managed to write an engrossing story that will hook its readers for many hours on end. Wilson has clearly researched the religions of Christianity and Vodou and this is evident thanks to the well-founded knowledge laced through the story throughout the book. The fact that Wilson has excellently researched the religions and subjects explored throughout this book in an in-depth way ensures that Ezkeel in Cite Soleil is wildly entertaining from beginning to end.
