Eternal Victim, Dexter Morgenstern

Horror & Occult, Literature & Fiction, Novella & Short Story, Supernatural & Paranormal

Follow the Witness as she travels through a perpetual series of nightmares, haunted by a mixture of pernicious serial killers and their imprisoned, undead victims, known as preta. As she wanders through time and memories shared by the killers and their victims, she fights to solve the puzzle of their connection to each other and to herself. Her only hope of salvation lies in connecting key victims to the souls who can rescue them, thus waking her from the nightmare, but one killer follows the next, bringing forth a new set of victims, a new score of preta, and immediately landing her in a new terror.

Eternal Victim is a captivating, terrifying and addictive novella that shocked as well as terrified me from the first couple of chapters. The story laced between the pages of the book is unique to say the least; the story is unlike anything I have read before, and so already I have to applaud the fantastic author, Dexter Morgenstern on his excellent ability to write an original story that will keep readers entertained for many hours. If you are a reader who loves twisty-turny stories that will shock as well as captivate you, then I have to recommend that you read Eternal Victim as it is one of the most shocking but brilliant books I have had the pleasure of reading.

Eternal Victim is a multi-layered novella that follows a young girl who is known only as the Witness. The reader will not find out who the protagonist is but along the way the author Dexter Morgenstern will leave little hints along the way, however, I still did not guess who it was and that is the sheer mystery that surrounds the book. The reader will follow the Witness as she is in a dream-like trance in which she witnesses gory deaths repeatedly. The Witness does not know where she is or what is happening to her and neither does the reader at first so you can imagine how traumatic the experience is. The Witness is stuck in a perpetual nightmare which is never ending, she is forced to witness the most graphic and gory of murders over and over again at the hands of many serial killers, from different places in the world and different years. Along the way, the Witness must figure out how to escape the trance-like nightmare while running from ghosts and victims of the killers who want to pull her even further into the gory nightmare. The Witness will have to figure out fast how to escape before it is too late and she does this by finding hidden treasures and clues along the way and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational Eternal Victim.

The story of Eternal Victim is quite simply horrific however it is incredibly entertaining at the same time. Eternal Victim is ultimately a horror mystery and so if you are easily fazed by gore then you might struggle with some parts of the story, however! There is much more to the story than murder, blood, and crime, instead, it is a puzzling mystery that will provoke your thinking and challenge you, just like the Witness to figure out how to escape the never-ending nightmare. As I read Eternal Victim I found myself invested in the story and dedicated to it by thinking about how the Witness could escape. Dexter Morgenstern flawlessly places the reader in the thick of the story and challenges them to think just like the Witness has to and I admit that this was brilliant to experience. I always loved being thrust deep into a story and so I applaud Morgenstern for taking this approach with his sensational book.

Dexter Morgenstern is a newly discovered author of mine; however, I wish so much I had found his work because Eternal Victim has now become one of my favorite horror reads of all time and I genuinely mean this. Never before have I been so enchanted by a novella , especially a horror story! It is very rare for me to love a horror story so I am impressed by how Morgenstern managed to do this with me. I believe Morgenstern managed to captivate me so much is thanks to the intrigue and puzzling mystery he laced throughout his book; I adored the feeling of being challenged and having to immerse myself in the story, it was a brilliant reading experience and one that I will not forget for a long time.

Not only is Dexter Morgenstern wonderful for captivating his readers, but he is also excellent for his ability to write thrilling literature. The literature courtesy of Morgenstern is phenomenal and reads flawlessly from one page to the next. With every page turned the tension becomes rifer and this is thanks to Morgenstern’s ability to build tension, suspense, and intrigue from the start to the very end. As Eternal Victim is a sensational, memorable and thrilling story that will captivate readers for many hours, I of course have to award this stellar book five stars!

I usually don’t comment on reader reviews, but I greatly appreciate the thorough and detailed feedback. This is my first released work since 2014, and I had several concerns with writing a book in this style, (too graphic? too videogamey? too repetitive?) but I’m glad I forced my overthinking to the side and stuck with it. It’s readers like you who keep me going, and I’m sincerely flattered by your words.

Thank you!
