Emerald Bound, Teresa Richards

Fantasy, Myth's & Legends, Teen & Young Adult

A princess, a pea, and a tower of mattresses. This is the sliver that survives of a story more nightmare than fairytale…

Maggie Rhodes, high school junior and semi-reformed stalker, learns the tale’s true roots after a spying attempt goes awry and her best friend Kate ends up as the victim of an ancient curse. At the center of the curse lies an enchanted emerald that has been residing quietly in a museum for the past fifty years. Admirers of the gem have no idea that it feeds on life. Or that it’s found its next victim in Kate.

Enter Lindy, a school acquaintance who knows more than she’s letting on, and Garon, a handsome stranger claiming he knows how to help, and Maggie is left wondering who to trust and how to save her best friend before it’s too late.

If only Maggie knew her connection to the fairy tale was rooted far deeper than an endangered best friend.

Emerald Bound is a dramatic, thrilling and exciting novel that will keep readers entertained, captivated and engrossed from the very first page. Fantasy/fairytale stories are currently my go-to read so when I read the description of Emerald Bound and learned that it was a fairytale adaptation, I knew that I had to read it as well as review it so that all you lovely readers could read about it. Never before have I been so captivated by a fantasy story and this is thanks to the exceptional author Teresa Richards who managed to delight me effortlessly with her fantasy tale that is unique and unlike anything I have read before.

Emerald Bound is an incredible novel, one that I was very excited to read when I read in the description that it involves a centuries-old curse. I adore mythology and I love fairy tales, and I admit, I have read many of this nature but Emerald Bound is different and stands out amongst the crowd thanks to the unique and modern twist placed on the fairy tale at the heart of this story. When I read that it was an adaption I admit that the old me was a little scared because usually, adaptations fail, but Emerald Bound was calling my name, and I knew it would fulfill my ‘fairytale needs’ and it really did book lovers!

Emerald Bound will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, Maggie Rhodes, a high school junior who one day finds herself getting herself and her friend in trouble after a ‘spying attempt goes awry.’ During Maggie’s ‘investiagation,’ her best friend Kate gets bestowed with an ancient curse but this is not a charming curse book lovers and in fact a dangerous one. The curse has to be broken but it is a centuries-old curse that involves an enchanted emerald that is not easily accessed.

Throughout Emerald Bound, the reader will follow Maggie as well as Lindy, a fellow student, and the mysterious but handsome Garon, who both help her on her quest to save her best friend before it is too late. What follows is a thrilling, enchanting and captivating read and if you are a reader who loves to be taken on an unforgettable journey then Emerald Bound is for you and should not be missed!

The story of Emerald Bound is excellent and incredibly well-developed thanks to Teresa Richards, the author of the book. Richards manages to develop her world with immaculate detail; every event, character, and setting is well thought out and planned and I was impressed by Richards’s flawless ability to do this. As I read Emerald Bound, I immediately was drawn into the book and felt captivated by Richards literature, and this is for many reasons. The main reason is is that Richards literature is detailed in the most immaculate of ways, the text is detailed but not heavy, it is beautifully written so that the reader will be able to immerse themselves in the story from beginning to end without difficulty.

Not only is Richards a talented author for her descriptive powers, she is also a phenomenal writer thanks to her characterization of the protagonist of the novel, Maggie. Maggie is a character every reader will be able to root for, her grit and determination to not give up and to fight to rescue her best friend is inspiring. Richards has essentially written a character study of Maggie, and I adore this approach in literature because it makes the story even more immersive and entertaining for a reader. Being able to accompany Maggie on her journey was incredible, it was wonderful to witness her awakening and discovery of new things she did not know about herself before, it made for an incredibly entertaining read. Because Richards captivates her readers from the start, the reader will feel as if they are in the same situation as Maggie; they too will be finding their way through the tumultuous landscape and feel the same emotions of fear, excitement and strange new things just as Maggie does. Emerald Bound is a truly immersive experience and so if you adore reading novels that you can be apart of then this story is for you!

As Emerald Bound is an exciting, compelling and action-packed fantasy adventure that will entertain and delight readers for hours on end I, of course, have to review this incredible book five stars! So please if you love fantasy stories that follow a strong protagonist while being taken on a memorable journey then Emerald Bound is for you!
