Elephants of Thailand: The Smiling Elephant, Aston Heath

Children & Picture Book, Literature & Fiction

Children and adults alike can learn compassion and courage from Chang. The Smiling Elephant tells a true story of the plight of elephants in captivity.

This beautifully illustrated children’s book about elephants in Thailand takes the child through an elephant’s life, starting from the jungle, life in the tourist industry and then being rescued and taken to an elephant refuge park. During this story your child will be educated on the true life of real elephants and the impact this has on their lives. They will also learn valuable lessons about overcoming being different and how our happiness, even during difficult times, can make those around us happy.

The Smiling Elephant is an adorable, poignant and entertaining children’s book that will excite young children as well as inform them of sad truths revolving around animal captivity. The story laced between the pages of The Smiling Elephant is an incredibly profound one as it examines elephants in captivity; the story features this terrible truth heavily however the story is also an entertaining one. I believe that The Smiling Elephant is a poignant story that all young children should read because it will inform as well as delight young minds and even spark a conversation about the topic with your children.

The Smiling Elephant follows an adorable elephant called Chang. The reader will follow Chang on its incredible and sometimes harrowing journey; the reader will first follow the elephant as a young elephant who is just starting out in the Jungle but then the reader will follow Chang as the elephant is taken to be an amusement for the tourist industry. However, it is not all doom and gloom as the elephant is soon rescued which is a lovely conclusion to a brilliant story.

The story laced between the pages is utterly brilliant and incredibly moving. The story of Chang and the journey the elephant faces is a tumultuous one which will tug on children’s heartstrings as well as adults heartstrings. Although the book features some heavy themes such as animal captivity, it is a necessity to read this as it will open young readers eyes to real happenings which are occurring all over the world today. Elephants of Thailand is a poignant book because it will inform young readers of such a way however not in a somber way but rather an informative and entertaining way.

Aston Heath is the author of The Smiling Elephant, and his writing is incredible. My children adored this book and they wanted to read it numerous times and I believe this is thanks to the original story that combines many emotive and entertaining themes and because it is easy to read. There is no use of complicated or technical words throughout the book, instead, it is written in an easy to read flawless way which will captivate and alight young readers minds with amazement. The illustrations laced throughout the book are just as phenomenal as the writing and young readers will adore looking at them and pointing out the animals.
