For too many years, Prudence Aldrich has been numbing the pain in her life with random sexual encounters. Her marriage to cold, self-centered Nick is, not surprisingly, on the rocks. But after several dangerous experiences with strangers, Prudence finally realizes that she needs therapy to stop her self-destructive behavior, and so she checks into the Serenity Hills rehab center.
Prudence blames herself for her irresponsible behavior and is filled with self-loathing. She’s convinced she’s totally at fault for Nick’s manipulative attitude and that, with therapy, she can return their relationship to its idyllic beginning. However, her therapist and the other members of her rehab group see the person behind the pain. As Prudence learns more about herself and the reasons for her behavior—including startling revelations about her childhood—she begins to understand the basis for her lack of sexual self-respect. She also learns that she’s not entirely to blame for the failure of her marriage. With the positive reinforcement from everyone at Serenity Hills, Prudence learns not to define herself by her past. But moving forward would mean letting go of Nick for good—and Prudence isn’t sure she can.
A Dress the Color of the Sky is an engrossing, enthralling read that enchanted me from beginning to end. This book was so phenomenal that I found it incredibly addictive… so addictive that I found it unputdownable. In other words, I was impatient to reach the next page because I so desperately wanted to know what would happen to the protagonist; when I would have to put this book down I pined for it, I wanted to be back on the journey of self-love with the protagonist of the novel Prudence and know what would happen to her and all those around her. This book really is a riveting piece of literature that holds astonishing characters, engrossing literature and let’s not forget a very talented author. This novel is by far one of my favorite reads of 2017, it is poignant, unique and simply magnificent and I am not the only person that thinks this as this wonderful book has already had film rights sold so this is so exciting for the author Jennifer Irwin! If you need more convincing on why you should read this novel then read the rest of my review to hear more about this dazzling piece of literature!
A Dress the Color of the Sky is a novel that is not my everyday read, in fact, I have never read a book that deals with this particular subject matter but gosh am I happy that I did because this book was brilliant and so informative. A Dress the Color of the Sky is told by the protagonist of the novel who is a sex addict; this is Prudence’s Aldrich journey from addiction to recovery. It is a poignant read and subject matter because it highlights a taboo subject that is not too often discussed, this is one of the many reasons why I admire the author of the novel Jennifer Irwin because she has decided to be bold with her work and Irwin is a debut author, so I am impressed by how accomplished she is!
The synopsis of A Dress the Color of the Sky is gripping, glorious and let’s not forget breath-taking. The plot of the novel constantly kept me on the edge of my seat and surprised which is thanks to the novel’s captivating protagonist and absorbing plot. One thing is for certain when you read this novel you will never once get bored. This book grabs you from the first page and draws you in on a journey that is unlike anything you have encountered before. It is as if the author Irwin has a binding spell on you and the only way to break this spell is to fully immerse yourself in the layers upon layers of the novels excellence.
Prudence Aldrich is an incredible character who asks as a vessel for the important subject matter of sex addiction. I think a lot of people do not understand this addiction and this is one of the many reasons why this book is so important, but it is true, not many people do, and I think some people would look down upon this addiction, but it is, in fact, a very troubling issue that can wreck the victim and all those around them, so Jennifer Irwin really has done a fantastic job of portraying this through the protagonist Prudence. To tell you more about Prudence, Prudence is a woman who is stuck in an unhappy marriage that is destroying her emotionally, she is married to a man called Nick who is cold-hearted and let’s not forget self-centered! He is the kind of man that you would warn your best friend away from, and I have to say I felt this feeling while reading this book as I felt as if I knew Prudence on a deep, personal level and so I was screaming why did she ever marry him!
Prudence is so miserable in her marriage that she has developed a bad outlet and this is by participating in sexual encounters with strangers which of course is very dangerous. One day Prudence experiences another encounter which has gone terribly wrong, and this is the pivotal moment in A Dress the Color of the Sky as this is when she decides to finally get help to change her dangerous, and somewhat reckless behaviors. Soon the reader follows Prudence to the Serenity Hills rehab center, and this place is where she will be treated for her sex addiction. During Prudence’s stay, the reader follows her on her journey of self-discovery and self-love, it makes for a poignant read as we learn all about her crippling addiction as she reflects back on her past and how some particular childhood experiences have affected her and why she turns to such drastic measures to outlet her anger and frustration at being in an unhappy marriage.
The story of A Dress the Color of the Sky is an incredibly dynamic, unique piece of work that took my breath away on more than one occasion, the pacing of this story was wonderfully written and plotted so that I did not get bored at any given time. I always measure my likeness of a book on whether I find myself looking at the page number; if I do in fact do this I know that the novel is taking its toll… in other words it is dragging, and I want it to end but A Dress the Color of the Sky was different than this and not like this at all as never once did I find myself referring to the page number and that is a sure sign that this book is a compelling piece of work that draws the reader in and captivates them to read it quickly and to reach the end of the book very fast.
The author of the novel Jennifer Irwin can only be described as a literary artisan. Writing for me is an art form, and this book certainly lies within that category. The objective of any great writer is the same as any artist: to communicate a message and to delight the recipient whether that be the listener, the viewer or the reader… in this case the reader. Irwin has wonderfully delighted me and has communicated the novel’s message to me soundly and perfectly. This is why I am in such awe of her, she is a creative genius and a visionary thinker who is also passionate and articulate and this, in my opinion, is a hard balance to find these days in the art of literature.
To summarize my thoughts on the charismatic novel that is A Dress the Color of the Sky, I would say if you are a reader who Is tired of reading the same old books that are lackluster and forgettable then take a chance with this dazzling book because I promise you now that you will not be disappointed. It is a novel that has everything the reader would want in a read and so much more; it has spine-tingling good content, dynamic, memorable characters, a charismatic author that writes beautifully and wonderfully so and lastly, it is an all-around, interesting, memorable read that you will not be disappointed if you choose to read it.
