RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

Dreaming of Oranges: An Unreliable Memoir, Marcelline Thomson

Coming of Age, Contemporary Fiction, Literature & Fiction

Two young women, fresh out of an exclusive college in Westchester, thumb their noses at the conventions of marriage and middle class life to seek adventure. It is 1961. Inspired by Lawrence Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet, armed with charm, good looks and wit, they set off on a journey to the Middle East and find more than they bargained for.

They compete for the love of a handsome young Cypriot and become ensnared in a web of secrecy that will send them careening through the cloak and dagger world of the region’s politics until forced to flee into the desert for safety. Their fraying friendship may not be enough to pull them through as they come to terms with loss of innocence, loss that characterized their country as America went from Camelot to the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Sirrine is a self-described Mediterranean type from the Midwest, Jean a blonde New York sophisticate—or so she seems on the surface. Their story is poignant, heartbreaking at times, but also told with comedy and flair. Reliable or not, this evocative “memoir” is totally engrossing.

Dreaming of Oranges: An Unreliable Memoir is one of the most moving, poignant and unforgettable books I have ever read and a book that will stay in my memory for a long time. Dreaming of Oranges is an emotional story that will take its readers on an emotional roller coaster ride that at times, is difficult to read thanks to the hard-hitting nature but mostly it is an inspiring novel.  Although Dreaming of Oranges is a hard-hitting read it is never too much and too oppressive that it can’t be read instead, the exceptional author Marcelline Thomson ensures that her book is never too emotional so that the reader will no longer want to read. Instead, Thomson creates the perfect balance of inspiration, humor and honest, and when the three is combined, it makes for stellar reading that shouldn’t be missed.

Dreaming of Oranges is an exceptional book that I do not wish to spoil, but the story focuses on two young women. These two women when finishing an ‘exclsuive college in Westchester’ decided to do the opposite of what the world would expect of them and instead seek adventure. This will take the two women out to the Middle East in the 1960’s, and the result is a captivating tale that should not be missed!

The story of Dreaming of Oranges is excellent and incredibly well-developed thanks to Marcelline Thomson, the author of Dreaming of Oranges. Thomson from the start manages to develop her story with immaculate detail; every event, character, and setting is well thought out and planned, and I was impressed by Thomson’s flawless ability to do this. As I read Dreaming of Oranges, I immediately was drawn into the book and felt captivated by Thomson’s spellbinding literature. Thomson’s writing is detailed in the most immaculate of ways; the text is detailed but not too dense, it is beautifully written so that the reader will be able to immerse themselves in the story from beginning to end without difficulty.

Dreaming of Oranges is a breathtaking book and one that will entertain and captivate readers from beginning to end. What I loved so much about the story was the author’s exceptional ability to take the reader on a journey effortlessly without a struggle. For a book to be successful, the reader has to be taken through a host of different emotions and believe them, and in Dreaming of Oranges, the excellent author accomplished this.

Overall Dreaming of Oranges is a moving, captivating and memorable book that has captured my heart and ran off with it and that is why I have to award this stellar book five stars!
