Devastation, Kevin J. McArthur

Action & Adventure, Dystopian & Post Apocalyptic, Literature & Fiction, Religion & Spirtuality

Imagine that you wake one morning and everything you have come to know is gone. Your home and car, place of business, even loved ones, are all gone. How would you survive?
On leave from the U.S. Marine Corps, Jason Black considered himself fortunate the morning an unnatural and catastrophic wind devastated Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite concerns for a distant fiance, Jason holes up with other survivors in the ruins of a warehouse. Among the survivors, Kelly “Rocky” Lopez is an attractive, thirty something single mother determined to return to her Utah family.
With diminishing resources, the survivors send Jason and Rocky in search of rescue and the cause of the mysterious storm. Their dangerous trek leads across a demolished countryside and into perilous encounters with other survivors. Scrounging daily for food, water, and shelter, they attempt to survive in a world where necessities are luxuries and conflicts turn deadly.

Dystopian novels are books that I adore; I adore dystopia because these stories have the ability to capture the reader’s attention and take them on an incredible – sometimes terrifying – journey. As a reader who loves this genre, I am always on the lookout for the best dystopian novels and that is how I came across the astonishing Devastation written by the superb author, Kevin J. McArthur. Although I love dystopian stories, I do not think all of them are wonderful, most dystopian novels these days are generic, unoriginal and sadly, predictable. However, Devastation is different because this book has an apocalyptic theme which I have never before read in a dystopian novel and it also has an excellent plot with mystery and suspense at its core and those three components for me make the perfect dystopian read… besides, when I saw U.S. Marine Corps in the description I was sold!

Devastation is a flawlessly written novel that is shrouded in mystery. The reader will follow the protagonist of the story Jason Black as he is on leave from the U.S. Marine Corps, but one morning, a deadly wind ravages Charlotte in North Carolina, and this is the premise of the exceptional Devastation. Jason Black will soon find himself in a dystopian world where everything is unpredictable and everybody is potentially dangerous. Jason is, of course, a Marine, so he uses his survivalist skills and instincts to survive, and this is how he meets the very beautiful Rocky who is banded with fellow survivors in a desolate warehouse. Jason can’t help but be drawn to Rocky, and when they get to know each other, he discovers that she has a family in Utah who she is desperate to be reunited with.

Jason and Rocky’s story begins here and what happens next is truly shocking. They find themselves on a mission to search for supplies, but when they get caught in a deadly storm, they will soon find themselves in a dangerous place where it is kill or be killed. It makes for a thrilling, terrifying story and so if you are a reader who loves gritty dystopian mysteries, then Devastation is a book that should not be missed.

Devastation is flawless in every way, I could sit here and type away for hours on end about every single perfect detail in this book, but because every aspect in this book is excellent, I would end up writing roughly 400 pages worth of compliments! That is why I will do my best to showcase some of the author’s many talents in a few short sentences. Kevin J. McArthur has flawlessly written a dystopian novel that features many themes such as tension, love, belonging, finding oneself and brutal moments. All four of these components are perfectly blended by McArthur to make the most brilliant, thrilling dystopian novel that has ever been written, and yes, this is a broad but true statement.

Never before have I been so entertained with a dystopian novel, with most dystopian stories there is an explanation at the very beginning about what the disaster was and why it happened, however, Devastation is a book shrouded in mystery. The reader will have to read and invest themselves in the novel for the answers to reveal themselves and that for me was a brilliant plot device courtesy of McArthur. Another plot device which I adored was McArthur’s flawless narration and literature. McArthur is no doubt a talented author, he has written nine books I believe so he is clearly a very talented, articulate man and a brilliant all-around wordsmith. His characterization in particular of Jason and Rocky was exceptional; these two characters are believable and so there narratives, as well as the conversations between them, jump right off the page. Another aspect of this book that will strike its readers is the author’s wonderful use of descriptive language to captivate and enthrall his readers. All readers love to be fascinated and to imagine being in the novel and McArthur has an incredible ability to do just this. His beautiful literature made me feel as if I was in the story, experiencing the harsh realities a post-apocalyptic world would have and making me feel as if I was battling the harsh and relentless landscape the characters in this book do.

As I am madly in love with Devastation and McArthurs phenomenal talent as an author, I have no choice but to award Devastation a dazzling Five Stars! It is rare book lovers to come across an original, unique, and powerful dystopian book so please, take advantage of this read and get lost in a terrifying but captivating world!

Devastation is one of my favorite stories I have read in quite a while. I was drawn by the story itself and enjoyed how well the characters were presented. Don’t forget to check out Return to Devastation, as Black continues the journey.
