In part one of this three-part saga, Marie is a timid 22-year-old woman with a past that would make a therapist throw up their hands, frustrated before they admit defeat and send her away. Main stream media has aided in her self-loathing; she can’t bear to pretend she loves, or even endures, the person in the mirror. Ian, a striking man with a freckled past himself, takes a special interest in Marie. He resents her self-deprecating tendencies and implores her, with his dominant and sexy demeanor, to see herself as he sees her: kind, soft hearted, beautiful and worth loving. From the moment he lays eyes on her his want for her is tangible. His blue-green golden flecked eyes and large, scarred, hands pry the insecurities from her body and occasionally her cloths with them. Marie’s uncertainties and anxieties chase her through the pages, clawing at her ankles, as she attempts to perceive herself as a person worthy of love. She fails, constantly and frustratingly. Quick to disregard any hope of a relationship with Ian, until, she doesn’t. She finally finds the will to overcome the obstacles, both real and imagined. Only to be metaphorically kicked in the ass, causing her to fall face first into the ditch of misery. Her world is muted, edges of vision fuzzy and a quarry of rocks settle deep in her middle. The attempts of her dearest friend and mother, to dig her from her self built crypt, are futile. She will always be, a little too big and a lot too clumsy. Shuffling her feet, with her back against the wall, a 500-foot cliff in front of her, and only a 2-foot ledge to walk upon. She has two choices: Allow herself to fall into the void or learn to fly, and there’s not much time to choose.
Deep Breaths is a moving, poignant tale that is flawlessly written by the wonderful author, Angela Edmonds. I always knew that I would love this novel, the description (written above) is incredible and piqued my interest from the beginning but when I started to read Deep Breaths I knew it would be good but never did I think that it would be even more brilliant as well as incredibly entertaining! Its beautiful, moving story combined with themes of love and finding yourself make Deep Breaths a stellar piece of contemporary fiction that needs to be read by everybody.
Deep Breaths is a moving novel that follows the protagonist of the story, Marie. Marie is an introverted twenty-two-year-old woman who has a past that troubles as well as haunts her. The type of pasts which even therapists would not want to treat due to the difficulty of her case. Her troubling history has made Marie hate herself, she does not love who she is, and she thinks she is incapable of love. Ian is the male feature in this exceptional novel and there is something mysterious as well as dominant about him… did I mention that he is very handsome also! Ian has taken a liking to Marie and he hates how she despises herself, he wants to make Marie feel good about herself and soon, between these two something blossoms and this book lovers is the premise of the extraordinary Deep Breaths. I warn you though, this book is so much more than a romance as this novel deals with many hard-hitting themes. The great thing about this book also is that Deep Breaths is part one in a three-part saga so if you find yourself loving this book (like I have!) then you will have two more to enjoy!
Admiration is a feeling I feel towards Angela Edmonds, the superb author of Deep Breaths. I admire her because her book is touching, moving, as well as entertaining and she incorporates many themes into her novel and perfectly blends them all together to make a brilliant contemporary fiction book. Edmonds is a pure talent and a genuine wordsmith as she manages to effortlessly capture her readers attention from the first page; her beautiful, moving book will make you feel a host of different emotions thanks to themes such as a troubling past, which some may or may not resonate with and themes of love which mostly everybody will be able to resonate with.
Angela Edmonds is not only a brilliant writer but also a fantastic writer. Her descriptive, moving words will move its readers, and her exceptional characterization will make all readers be able to invest in her novel easily. As Deep Breaths is a truly stunning novel that will captivate and compel readers, I have no choice but to award this touching story a dazzling Five Stars!
