RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

Company of Spies, Laurence Daniel Tuck

Action & Adventure, Espionage & Conspiracy, Literature & Fiction, Politics, Thriller & Psychological Thriller

Apparently unrelated people are committing suicide and Anna Lingaard suspects foul play. She unearths a conspiracy that could rock the foundations of the British Security Services and when Lingaard meets the enigmatic Arthur Prendergast she is thrust into a shady underworld that exists in her own office.

In the spirit of John Le Carre and Len Deighton, Company of Spies is a darkly comic story of a secret service struggling under the weight of it’s own administrative red tape and office politics. Prendergast and Prendergast Returns is as funny as it is gripping. Like a cross between Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Office. The world of Espionage has never required so much admin.

Company of Spies is book one in The Prendergast Files written by the talented and accomplished author Laurence Daniel Tuck and wow, what an electric start to a series! When I read the description of Company of Spies I instantly knew I had to read it thanks to the mention of a shocking plot and even humor! The description is laced with humor and that is a rare gem to find in an espionage/thriller based book so it is safe for me to write that I was excited to get started reading Company of Spies! Now that I have finished reading Company of Spies I can happily write that the book lived up to and exceed my high expectations so if you are looking to get lost in an espionage thriller filled with humor then Company of Spies is for you!

Company of Spies follows the protagonist of the novel Anna Lingaard who has been tasked with a suspicious case; the case is that ‘unrelated people are committing suicide’ and Lingaard is suspicious of this and believes that it is not just coincidence but rather, foul play. Upon her investigation, Lingaard will team up with Arthur Prendergast who works for the British Security Sevices and when she does they will uncover some disturbing facts that exist on the streets as well as in the office and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational Company of Spies.

The story of Company of Spies is one that captured my attention immediately thanks to the fast-paced story, enigmatic characters and thrilling plot. As I read Company of Spies I was honestly in awe, it was like a present was being unwrapped before my eyes and the more the pages turned, the more excited I got for the big reveal. The big reveal in the book I must add was exceptional and was definitely worth the wait. Throughout Company of Spies tension and suspense are rife and the author Laurence Daniel Tuck knows how to correctly build this with shocks and twists and turns galore that will keep readers turning the pages with haste.

Laurence Daniel Tuck is a newly discovered author of mine but gosh do I wish I had found his work sooner! Never before have I encountered such a rare and unique book that falls in the genre of an espionage thriller. The book is unique because it laces a ton of humor throughout the story and although I thought this at first would damage the story (because of the unusual nature of it), it did not and instead complimented the story perfectly. It is refreshing to be able to read a book that is not so sinister that I feel depressed because although the book is sinister in parts, it is mostly entertaining and humorous. If you are a reader who loves unique fiction that masterfully combines opposing themes, then Company of Spies is for you!

As Company of Spies is a splendid novel that will keep your heart racing as well as your face smiling I, of course, have to award the dramatic and entertaining book five stars! Please do have a read of Company of Spies and also have a lookout for the next books in the series to come, I know I will be!

Thank you for the question Darren. I have largely used generalisations and ideas and characterisations from my experiences. As for specific plot points, maybe one or two. I have to say that I did work in a different type of department to the one realised in the book, but there was a great deal of cross over experience which I could call upon.

Thank you for such a positive review. I am very pleased that you like my book. It is my first book and I was nervous as to how it would be received. But this review picks up on everything that I was aiming to achieve. I have always had a great love of Espionage, and after working in the British Civil Service myself for 10 years, it inspired me to write a spy book based in a more real world. There is a lot of me in Pendergast, a lot of what he says is what I would have been… Read more »

I have a question for Laurence Aimee. Laurence — You wrote that you served for 10 years, did you include any real events you experienced and put them in the book? Would love to know. Also it looks great man!
