In 1970, John Kowalski is one of many young, naive teenage soldiers sent to Vietnam to fight in an unpopular war. Dubbed “Cherries” by their more seasoned peers, these newbies suddenly found themselves thrust into the middle of a terrible nightmare – literally forced to become men overnight. On-the-job-training is intense, however, most of these teenagers were hardly ready to absorb the harsh mental, emotional, and physical stress of war. When coming under enemy fire for the first time and witnessing death first-hand, a life-changing transition begins…one that can’t be reversed.
Cherries is a poignant, moving memoir-inspired novel written by an incredible man who is a Veteran who served in Vietnam. As my husband is a Recon Marine, I have always loved reading books about the Military; this book caught my eye in particular as my husband’s father also served in the Vietnam war. I had high hopes for this book, and I am so pleased to write that these expectations of mine were exceeded! This incredible story was flawless, I do not know the author John Podlaski, but if I did I would tell him what an incredible man he is and how much I admire and thank him for his service!
Cherries is an incredible book written by the talented John Podlaski. Podlaski takes the reader on his tour in Vietnam, but through some characters he has created. This is all I believe based on actual experiences. We follow the characters of the book as they try to survive the dangerous situations they come across. The reader also witnesses their bravery as well as their sorrow; for this reason, it makes for a poignant, moving read that will make you feel a host of different emotions. Do not let this scare you away though! As this book has plenty of humor to keep, you laughing in the moments you need too. I adore how Podlaski managed to inject humor at the perfect time; it was like he knew that the book was hard-hitting and decided to inject some humor to keep the reader engrossed. This, in my opinion, shows that Podlaski is a talented author because he knows how to capture, retain and grasp the reader’s attention and this is a quality I love in an author!
This book needs to be read by everybody as it highlights some critical issues. Issues such as PTSD and being different when you return home. I know all too well that war changes you and serving changes you, everytime my husband returns I see a little bit of difference, and it is normal. Soldiers who return home are changed forever, some can cope better than others, this is a fact, but some struggle beyond comprehension and I adore how Podlaski highlighted this. I do not like to write too much about my husband as I am incredibly private, but my husband will always be ready if anything was to happen. For example, when we go to a restaurant, he will first scan the restaurant with his eyes and know where all the exits are and he will never have his back to an exit. War changes you, it makes you alert, and sometimes a little paranoid. I sound like a broken record now, but I do admire Podlaski for being so honest and forthcoming, it is brave to do, and for that, he has my gratitude.
Podlaski is a brave and incredible writer. His words are captivating and flow beautifully from one page to the next. I adored how Podlaski kept the reader entertained from beginning to end; he managed to grasp and hold my attention the whole way through, there is plenty of action, soul, and inspiration. It is an incredible book; one that I would implore all of you lovely readers to read!
To conclude my thoughts on this extraordinary, thrilling, emotional tale, I would say if you are looking for a military read that is honest as well as engrossing, then this wonderful book is for you! This stellar read gets Five Stars from me!
