Charm and Strange: Poems, Linda Casebeer

Linda Casebeer has worked for many years as a medical education researcher. Her poems have appeared in journals such as Slant, Earth’s Daughters, Chest, Hospital Drive, Pinyon, Crab Orchard Review, Canary, The Big Window Review, Bones, The Raven’s Perch. She has published one collection of poems, The Last Eclipsed Moon, from Cherry Grove Collections in 2008. She lives with her husband, writer, and literature professor emeritus, Edwin Casebeer, in Birmingham, Alabama. They have five children. They have published one novel together, The Canary Room.

Charm and Strange: Poems is a poetry book I was desperate to read ever since discovering it. I love poetry but only if the poems that are written are entertaining, meaningful, and well written. Now that I have finished Charm and Strange: Poems I can happily write that this book is all three of these things and more! It is a stunning collection of a vast amount of poems that will move and transfix you from start to finish. That is why I would already recommend this book to you lovely readers, however, if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more!

Charm and Strange: Poems is a vast collection of poems about a wide variety of topics. Charm and Strange: Poems however does have recurring themes of love, death, and even flowers! Which makes for some really beautifully moving moments. Linda Casebeer’s collection of poems is stunning and they are emotionally charged and will definitely evoke thoughts and feelings in you and that is one of the many joys about this book!

Charm and Strange: Poems also features many unique poems that aren’t similar to anything I have read before. Because some were so unique I found that I could not stop thinking about them! And would end up re-reading them because I wanted to immerse myself in it again.

Linda Casebeer is a newly discovered poet of mine, but I wish I had discovered her work sooner because never before have I been so transfixed by poems! I have read a lot of poems in my time, especially since a young age but some of the poems in Charm and Strange: Poems provoked me more than I have been before and that is the beauty of this book. Linda Casebeer does this with her mesmerizing prose and well developed and structured poems. The poems will quite simply have readers turning the pages from beginning to end with haste!

To conclude my thoughts on this wonderful book, Charm and Strange: Poems, I would say Charm and Strange: Poems is a sensational, unique, and beautiful poetry book that should not be missed, I, of course, have to award this stellar book five stars! So please, have a read of Charm and Strange: Poems and get lost in the captivating words of Linda Casebeer and be compelled to read from the very beginning to the very end… you will not regret it!
