Despite the years of bullying in school, Jewel Hart has remained sweet and kind. She has it all–a great life, a great family, and beauty–but she has never been able to obtain the one thing she wants–to belong.
When Jewel meets Kaiden Carter, a good-looking, charming new student at York Mills High, things start to look up. On the surface, he is perfect, but Jewel can’t shake the feeling that everything is not as it seems.
When the devastation of the rising suicides in her school hits too close to home and drives Jewel into a deep despair, she clings to Kaiden’s strength to find her way back. Through the pain and fear surrounding her, she finds hope and the will to go on. But just as she picks herself up, tragedy strikes again, threatening to steal her last glimmer of hope. How will she go on? Can she ever find her place in the world?
Cascading Petals is one of the most moving, poignant and unforgettable novels I have ever read and a book that will stay in my memory for a long time. Cascading Petals is an emotional story that will take its readers on an emotional roller coaster ride that at times, is difficult to read thanks to the hard-hitting nature but mostly it is an inspiring novel. The story of Cascading Petals is inspiring because it shows that all people, in particular, young people who are struggling with their emotions, have so much to live for and that is a beautiful message courtsey of the author Jane C. Brady. Although Cascading Petals is a hard-hitting read it is never too much and too oppressive that it can’t be read, instead Brady ensures that her novel is never too sad so that the reader will no longer want to read. Instead, Brady creates the perfect balance of inspiration and hard-hitting reality, and when the two is combined, it makes for stellar reading that should not be missed.
Cascading Petals will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, Jewel Hart. Jewel is a young woman who is completing her final year at school, and she is excited for her schooling to be over because Jewel has been bullied all throughout her school life and it has affected her profoundly. However despite the bullying Jewel has always shown resilience and has tried to remain positive even when it seems impossible too; Jewel has a loving family as well as beauty, and she is loved and has so much to live for. Jewel, however, can’t shake the feeling that she does not belong and so she always doubts her life.
The reader will follow Jewel throughout her days, and soon she will meet Kaiden Carter, a handsome new student attending her school and on the surface he is perfect and Jewel is attracted and drawn to him, but Jewel can’t seem to shake the feeling that something is not quite right with him. Soon Jewel will experience more tumultuous emotions because suicide is becoming all too common within her school and this leads her to spiral and what happens next is emotive as well as powerful and should be read by everybody.
The story of Cascading Petals is excellent and incredibly well-developed thanks to Jane C. Brady, the author of Cascading Petals. Brady from the start manages to develop her story with immaculate detail; every event, character, and setting is well thought out and planned, and I was impressed by Brady’s flawless ability to do this. As I read Cascading Petals, I immediately was drawn into the book and felt captivated by Brady’s spellbinding literature. Brady’s writing is detailed in the most immaculate of ways, the text is detailed but not too dense, it is beautifully written so that the reader will be able to immerse themselves in the story from beginning to end without difficulty.
Not only is Jane C. Brady a talented author for her descriptive powers, but she is also a phenomenal writer thanks to her characterization of the protagonist of the novel Jewel. Jewel is a character every reader will be able to root for as well as relate to thanks to the emotions she feels. Many readers, especially young readers will be able to relate to her feelings of feeling like an outcast, feeling like you don’t belong and so on and so that is why I adore her character because it is important to read about a relatable and believable character, especially when a poignant subject is explored through such character. Brady has essentially written a character study of Jewel, and I adore this approach in literature because it makes the story even more immersive and entertaining for a reader. Being able to accompany Jewel on her journey was incredible, it was remarkable to witness her changing emotions as she grows and develops and yes it was emotional, but it was also captivating.
