In addition to starting a successful writing career at 71, he enjoys cooking and playing guitar. He even owns a successful travel booking business. However, it was his time growing up in Brooklyn, NY that inspired him to craft a novel based on his experiences growing up during the notorious crime family days. Bob now enjoys life in warm and sunny Florida with his wife and family.
Now, how wonderful does Bob sound?! Bob is a truly exceptional writer and I hope that you lovely readers have a read of Bob’s work because you will not regret it! Please see below an interview between me and Bob, I hope that you enjoy Bob’s answers to my questions, they are incredible and provide some great advice too!
When I was younger, I was always interested in action stories. I grew up in Dyker Heights,
Brooklyn In the early 40s and learned how to take care of myself with the assistance of my father. By the time the 50s came, I was able to survive just about anything. My character Joey Toranetti is the same type of person I was.
The stories are about living in Brooklyn in the 50s and 60s. The larger crime families lived in the same area, so I was able to see and hear a lot of things.
I was inspired to write Joey by a good friend of mine. She bugged me to write about my life for three years. I was 71 when I finally gave in. I never felt I could write a letter never mind a book. I was always a pretty good storyteller so, I made up this character Joey. I used some of my own experiences and started writing. Once I started writing I couldn’t stop. Like I said from the beginning, I love action.
I wrote my first three books in 5 months. I fell in love with my character Joey that when I thought about an incident while I was growing up, I twisted, and embellished it so there would be lots of action.
All the stories are about the organized crime families in my area of town, and Joey Toranetti gets very involved in protecting his family and business including all his employees.
Everyone has a story to tell. Figure out what it is that you want to write about and sit down and start writing. Don’t worry about the grammar or punctuations just write. When you finish what you want to say then you can go back and make the corrections you want.
Next get someone who can edit adequately and have them do the editing for you.
I have my wife assist me with the editing. I also have a few friends that help. When you’re ready to publish, then you need a professional editor.
There is not just one thing that is important about a book. The story must flow from the beginning to the end. You want your characters to be interesting and your readers to know what they are thinking. The cover is critical. You must have it done by a cover designer. Finally, the title must make people think about the content in the book.
I will be starting another book soon. I have some ideas but have not begun to write them down. I do have a book I’ve been writing, but that won’t be ready for a while. It is not part of the Joey Toranetti series. However, book seven should be out by March, or April 2019.
