Black Mirrors of the Soul, Charles McDonald Jr

Action & Adventure, Fantasy, Magic & Sword and Sorcery

We, the seeds of Humanity, are all the descendants of hardened criminals, fighting to survive the unmaking of A Throne of Souls.

Magic and technology have already met on a world far more advanced than our own only to dispense their most dangerous and hardened criminals, for magic has been outlawed. Their descendants—us, here on Earth, along with the rest of Humanity—are now left to grapple with a Creation undone at the hands of an outlaw mage whose Master Plan affects the seeds of Humanity throughout the known Universe. This outlaw—this Dark Knight of Magic—must accumulate immeasurable power to thwart the fork of consequences that brought forth the making of A Throne of Souls. This story, this execution of his Master Plan originating centuries into the past, begins and ends with a triad of pivotal relationships and evolves through his understanding of his own soul. Within the Master Plan, the dichotomy between hate and hope, across a landscape far beyond epic, is illustrated through vibrant characters developed over two-and-a-half decades.

Black Mirrors of the Soul is book two in the Throne of Soul series written by the incredibly talented author Charles McDonald Jr. A short while ago I read and reviewed a tremendous book called A Kingdom Forgotten, and A Kingdom Forgotten astounded me and thrilled me from beginning to end thanks to the exceptional story and excellent writing courtesy of McDonald. Upon finishing A Kingdom Forgotten, I was extremely excited to get started on Black Mirrors of the Soul. I admit that there was a slight part of me that was hesitant to immerse myself in the book fully at first and this was because I loved the first book so much! It is the sad truth that many sequels do not live up to the quality of the first book, but I can happily write that a reader will not encounter this issue with Black Mirrors of the Soul! I can happily write book lovers that Black Mirrors of the Soul was incredible and a strong follow up and expansion of an already exceptionally well crafted and entertaining story. What struck me in the first book A Kingdom Forgotten was the sheer amount of imagination thanks to McDonald as well as McDonald’s creativity, and in Black Mirrors of the Soul, I felt this once again. McDonald from the start hooks his reader and captivates them to read and so, of course, I will be recommending this exceptional book but if you need more convincing then read the rest of my review to learn more about Black Mirrors of the Soul!

Before I discuss the plot of A Kingdom Forgotten, I think it is a good idea to inform you lovely readers of the plot of the first book. In A Kingdom Forgotten, the reader will be taken on a spell-binding journey which combines technology with magic and will take readers on an adventure in the present and the past. The protagonist of the novel is called Damon and Damon is a core character because he is the driving force of the story and the one who will change everything… what do I mean by that? Well, you will have to read the book to find out!

Black Mirrors of the Soul reunites the reader with Damon but does so in a unique way blending his past adventures that made him who and what he is today entangled asynchronously with furthering a set of storylines that run in both present and future timelines.  The world-building started in A Kingdom Forgotten will be expanded on, and wow it is breath-taking! The stakes are much higher in book two because the reader will learn the context of magic being outlawed and how this affects the seeds of humanity throughout the known universe. The reader will be introduced to many new contextual layers of characters both beloved and hated, and how they led the Dark Knight of Magic to forge a Master Plan that could change the history of time forever, and this—book lovers—is the premise of Black Mirrors of the Soul which is undoubtedly a novel that should not be missed!

In a moment I will discuss my thoughts on the story however before I do I am going to be sharing a couple of paragraphs written by the author of this novel, Charles McDonald Jr! I am really excited to have McDonald tell us more about his story, so I hope you enjoy!

“Writing Black Mirrors of the Soul was a deeply emotional experience for me.  These characters, especially Dallia, are very dear to me.  When they hurt, I hurt.  I feel their emotional experiences coursing through my veins as I’m writing each scene.  In all honesty, this series is not for everyone, and you’ll hear me admit to that over and over.  However, one thing you cannot say about it is: that it was written without the full weight of my heart and soul behind it.  I put everything I had into this text and these illustrations.  My creative touch is on every single part of this novel and this story.  I was passionately driven to expel demons of the story’s atrophy and to thank the living spirit of Robert Jordan who so kindly and carefully provided a guidance that was both meaningful and benevolent.

Black Mirrors of the Soul is—to me—the most important book in the entire series.  That doesn’t mean it’s the best or the end-all-be-all of the series, but BMOS does something the other books in the series do not—it provides a central and committed focus on how and why Damon became the man you see today.  It provides context of context and if you skip over this book, I don’t want you to read any further in the series.  It will be lost on you to understand the central theme of the story.  This is a highly unique interpretation and telling of the story of Creation, but it is largely told through the experiences, mistakes, loves, and relationships of Damon of Basrat.  Thus, understanding how Damon became Damon is absolutely central to the story.  Do not miss this book!  It will open your eyes to both a new way of thinking and a new way of finding beauty in places and people you hadn’t thought possible.” – Charles McDonald Jr

How wonderful is Charles book lovers for sharing this with us! The story of Black Mirrors of the Soul is an incredible one, and once again the author Charles McDonald Jr knows how to grasp his reader’s attention and captivate them until the end. Black Mirrors of the Soul is a large book with dense writing and long sentences, however, do not let this scare you because the quality of the writing is so high that you will wish the writing was even longer! A novel with so many chapters, characters, and places has to be incredibly good for a reader to keep turning the pages and I truly believe that Black Mirrors of the Soul is so, please do not let the page count scare you. Besides, the fact that the text is so long shows us, readers, that McDonald is a dedicated author, dedicated to the evolution of his story and dedicated to keeping his readers entertained, shocked and enthralled so if anything McDonald should be praised for his writing style!

What I loved so much about Black Mirrors of the Soul is that it is a visually stunning book because the book is laced with glorious maps which will set the scene for the story as well as vivid illustrations. An author does not have to include this in a book, but the fact that McDonald has once again shows us, readers, that he is dedicated to his readers reading experience and wants them to have an incredible time and these illustrations definitely do add to the fantastic nature of the book!

Black Mirrors of the Soul for me was incredibly fast-paced, and the action laced throughout the story was even more intense than it was in the first book. The reader in Black Mirrors of the Soul will get to witness the expansion of the world and with this comes more characters and more plot avenues which are all perfectly weaved together by McDonald. From the start, McDonald managed to intrigue as well as entertain me with his vivid world and how exceptionally well he described it. McDonald’s strengths are with his descriptions, and because he is so excellent at this it makes the reader want to immerse themselves fully into the story and not want to put the book down until every page is read!

Charles McDonald Jr is an exceptional author whose literature manages to transfix me and one of his writing qualities I love the most is his characterization, especially of Damon. Damon is a protagonist all readers will be able to root for, his story and his journey is one that commands the story, and his personality shines so much that the reader won’t be able to resist but be hooked, and that is thanks to McDonald’s remarkable characterization.

Overall Black Mirrors of the Soul is a magnificent, sensational and entertaining book that will easily captivate its readers and captivate them to read for many hours so of course, I am going to award it five stars! It would be criminal not to.
