Tom really wishes he could do something; he feels he has no control, and recently, his vivid hallucinations have gone from being an escape to being almost real. His alter-ego appears to have a plan, and the balls to actually take action.
If The Bed Falls In is a sinister, psychological thriller that will have its readers guessing from beginning to end thanks to the novels unpredictable nature and tense plot. As I read If The Bed Falls In I felt myself compelled to read from very early on and I believe this is down to three factors, which are one) the authors excellent writing that jumped off the page, two) the unique but intriguing premise of the story about a man that does not even know who he is and three) excellent plot devices such as shocking twists and turns that kept me turning the pages with haste! All three of these things kept me turning the pages and this is all thanks to the incredible author, Paul Casselle and his talent but before I discuss him I would love to discuss the premise of the story.
If The Bed Falls In is a unique novel as it follows somebody who has a split personality… or does he? The whole premise of If The Bed Falls In is that we do not know everything about the protagonist of the novel. Tom Friday is the star of If The Bed Falls In and he could be classed as your average, middle-aged single man who loves to photograph. Tom, however, struggles with his fitness, moods and motivation thanks to his life being nothing spectacular and so he resorts to drugs as a form of escapism. When Tom does so, he starts to experience strange and peculiar hallucinations which end up taking over him and morphing with his alter ego Joseph Miller who so happens to be an MI6 agent.
Joseph Miller is everything that Tom Friday is not, he lives a fast-paced, action-packed life and is full of energy and so he is far different from the mundane life Tom is currently living. As the reader reads If The Bed Falls In, they are constantly kept guessing as they, like Tom does not know what it real. Did Tom instead have an overdose and that is why he is having such vivid hallucinations? Does Tom have a split personality order or is Joseph Miller actually real and a remnant of his past? If The Bed Falls In will having you think of questions like this from beginning to end. What happens next is a truly shocking action-adventure/ thrilling psychological journey that will take its readers on a unique but exciting ride into the deep depths of the corrupt world of society all while Tom Friday tries to discover who he indeed is and whether Joseph Miller is a part of him or just a hallucination.
As I am writing my review of If The Bed Falls In all I can think is that I want to read it again! The first time I read this book, I was hooked, and it is no surprise I felt this way as I adore psychological thrillers more than any genre. The psychological aspects of this story are truly gripping, and as I have studied Psychology I found myself trying to profile Tom Friday and diagnose whether he did have a personality disorder/split personality! That is how invested I was in the thrilling story, and this is all thanks to the impeccable author, Paul Casselle.
Paul Casselle has many talents as an author, but his most apparent talent is that he is able to grasp his reader’s attention very soon into the novel. There are numerous ways he managed to do this, but one of the reasons is thanks to his exciting and unpredictable storyline that takes a deep and harsh look at the Government system, intelligence agencies and the dark side to them as well as banks and their greed. All of these themes are interesting so to read about them in great detail that was entertaining as fun screams to me that Casselle is a talent as he knows how to keep his readers entertained with not only his prose but his phenomenal story and intriguing themes.
Paul Casselle as well as being a brilliant storyteller is also a fantastic writer and creator of characters. The characters of Tom Friday and Joseph Miller was superb and unlike anything I have read before. You may be thinking that these two characters are similar as they are apart of the same person however they could not be more different, and this is because of how excellent Casselle’s characterization is. Both of these characters are different in every way, they are different intelligence wise, in looks and even in personality and speech. To read a novel with two characters who are very different was fascinating to me so thank you Casselle for writing such brilliant characters!
As If The Bed Falls In is a truly stunning, intriguing, and definitely unforgettable novel, I have no choice but to award this excellent book Five Stars! Also, the great thing about this book is that when you get hooked, you will have another to read as there are two books in this series so far and another to be released I believe!
