He questions his sanity as something named “Black” starts to talk to him during these sessions. Thank you for joining us today at Red Headed Book Lover! Please tell us more about yourself
So glad to be here! Let’s see…I live in beautiful upstate New York with my three kids, cats and dog. I’m a paranormal investigator and researcher, have led a ghost hunting team for more than four years and have given numerous talks and presentations on our findings and experiences. It’s a pretty busy life.
Could you please tell us readers about your book and what inspired you to write your book?
Shifting to Black is my second book in this series and it picks up where A Step Into Darkness left off. Joe Paine is the caretaker and manager at Forest View, an apartment complex converted from an old, abandoned asylum. Joe begins to use a Ouija board he found on the property and questions his sanity as something named “Black” starts showing itself. Out of the Dark Paranormal, an investigative team researching a murder in another town, finds ties to the old asylum and head to Forest View to see what they can find. Things turn dark quickly.
My inspiration for this book was truly to carry on the story begun in A Step Into Darkness, but overall, it’s my love of and fascination with the paranormal. The third book in the series will take everything even deeper into a ghostly realm.
What would your advice be for aspiring writers?
Write, write and write some more! Don’t worry if it’s good or bad; that’s for the editing process. The more you write, the better you’ll get. When I look back to the things I wrote in college, I cringe. It’s all a process.
In your opinion, what is the most important thing about a book?
To me, it’s the characters. They need to be believable with realistic dialogue. If you have characters the reader can relate to, you can take them anywhere…any setting, any situation…and the reader will follow along.
What is your writing process like?
Mine varies from day to day, but I try to set aside a few hours of quiet time to work on my books most days. This time can be spent researching, editing, marketing…it all keeps me moving forward. I also find I get many of my ideas waiting with my son for the bus each morning. It’s dark, quiet and we’re surrounded by spooky trees. I try to have a schedule, but life usually gets in the way. I tend to not write on weekends unless I’m so excited about a chapter that I can’t resist.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
Initially, I have a sense of what is going to happen with particular characters and my desk is covered with little sticky notes of thoughts, ideas, images – even bits of conversations between my characters. My paranormal investigations give me a lot to pull from in my storylines. I tend to write like crazy, letting the story evolve, and I don’t edit anything until it’s done. I let the characters lead the way.
Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
I read a lot, usually just before bed or if I can grab a Saturday afternoon to myself. It’s hard to say who my favorite authors are as I’ve been inspired by so many. I can tell you that my favorite genres are paranormal and horror, and I try to read as much “true ghost” stories as I can get my hands on. I also love poetry.
Lastly, when can we readers expect to read more wonderful books from you?
I hope to have the third book in this series released by early spring 2019. I also have plans, and sticky notes, for a fourth and, probably, fifth book before it’s done. Over the last thirty years I have also kept a journal of my experiences with the paranormal and am toying with the idea of releasing that as a separate book.
