In the summer of 1914, Thomas Tileston Wells, a New York lawyer, traveled through Europe with his wife and two children. But what began as an idyllic summer vacation descended into a nightmare as Europe’s armies began mobilizing for the devastating First World War. Wells’s memoir, published in full for the first time, immerses the reader in the bygone era of luxury cruise ships and first-class dining cars – and then bears witness to the shattering beginning of the “war to end all wars.” Wells’s memoir uncorks a century-old message in a bottle, with reports of assignation, financial crisis, and war that are startlingly familiar.
Christopher Kelly has undoubtedly made a name for himself in the historical nonfiction genre thanks to the four incredible books he has written; all of which I have loved! Christopher Kelly is an author whose work I genuinely adore and admire, and it is because he manages to write historical nonfiction that is entertaining as well as informative and that is a rare combination to find these days book lovers. Kelly’s previous three books are all exceptional, and I have read and reviewed each one, they are called: America Invaded, America Invades, and Italy Invades. The series is an exceptional one and are full of a significant amount of historical context, so of course, I was excited to read and review An Adventure in 1914, another book by Christopher Kelly. However! I was pleasantly surprised to discover that An Adventure in 1914 is different from Kelly’s previous three books and I will explain why. This is because An Adventure in 1914 is a memoir, edited by Christopher Kelly. The memoir is not about Kelly but rather T. Tileston Wells and together they have worked to bring Wells story to life, and the result is fascinating as well as shocking, and so I am so excited to be sharing it with you today book lovers.
An Adventure in 1914 is a memoir with a strong theme of history as it takes the reader back to 1914, in the summer and introduces the reader to America lawyer, T. Tileston Wells (aka Thomas Tileston Wells). In An Adventure in 1914, Wells recounts his story to Kelly and Kelly shares it and the reader will be taken on a journey through Europe during World War I. Wells recounts that he was going on a vacation to Europe with his wife and two children however when they arrived, their long-awaited summer soon turned to horror because ‘Europe’s armies began mobilizing for the devastating First World War’. The journey the reader is taken on through the words of Wells is fascinating as well as accurate and terrifying. Imagine just going on a holiday with your family to find that you are then surrounded by destruction, death, and war, it is horrible, so I can’t even begin to imagine what Wells went through.
The journey the reader is taken on is intriguing as well as historically fascinating because the reader gets to learn of what it was like in Europe during 1914 and what happened to those caught there at this tumultuous point in history because the reader is learning this of somebody who was actually there! That is why An Adventure in 1914 is a gem of a read because it is a memoir as well as a piece of historical nonfiction that perfectly paints a picture of what it was like and this will satisfy those that love memoirs and biographies as well as history.
An Adventure in 1914 is a gem of a book that is hidden amongst the historical non-fiction/memoir genre and a book that demands to be read by everybody. When I discovered An Adventure in 1914, I was excited because I, of course, loved Kelly’s previous three books but I was also excited because the genre is different slightly to what he would usually write so I was excited to read whether Kelly could pull it off and I can write now book lovers that he did! Because An Adventure in 1914 is a thrilling, exciting as well as a poignant book that is expertly written and should not be missed.
Overall if you are a reader who loves history as well as memoirs and enjoy being taken on a journey back in time through history, then An Adventure in 1914 is for you! I, of course, am going to be awarding An Adventure in 1914 five stars book lovers!
