American River: Currents, Mallory M. O’Connor

Contemporary Fiction, Historical Fiction, Literature & Fiction

In the second book of the American River trilogy, a cavalcade of disasters both personal and public threatens to overwhelm the scattered members of the McPhalan, Ashida, and Morales clans during the tumultuous 1960s.

Kate still mourning the death of her brother, Julian finds herself torn between her love for Carl, now a celebrated conductor who is looking for career opportunities on the East Coast, and her devotion to the West and especially the family ranch at Mockingbird. Also, while attending a music festival in Venice, Italy, she meets Stefan Molnar, a renowned concert pianist, who has become her sister Alex’s mentor (and lover). As Kate and Stefan’s unintentional relationship grows, complications multiply.

Meanwhile, Tommy Ashida, now studying in Japan, falls in love with Emiko Namura, the beautiful, sheltered daughter of a Tokyo businessman. He hopes she holds the key to understanding his Japanese heritage, but will that knowledge lead to happiness or something darker?

Determined to make her mark in the male-dominated art world, Kates mother, Marian, decides to move to New York while Kates father, Owen, becomes involved in local politics. When he is elected to the California Assembly, he finds himself in direct opposition to Jorge Morales, Carls father.

Alliances fray, relationships dissolve, divisive secrets are revealed, and promises are broken as the members of three California families struggle to salvage their shattered dreams.

Set against the natural beauty of Northern California, OConnor weaves a complex tapestry of interrelationships and betrayals that captures the mood and resonance of a decade that began in innocence and ended in despair.

American River: Currents is book two in the American River Trilogy and wow what a sensational sequel! A short while ago I read and reviewed the first book in the American River Trilogy called American River: Tributaries and my verdict was that it was a moving piece of literature that should not be missed. Upon finishing the first book, I instantly wanted more but I had to wait for the second book to be released and now that it is I am so happy and excited to share the second book with you lovely readers!  The story that unfolds throughout the course of a book is emotional as well as entertaining and full of many poignant moments that will delight and entertain readers for many hours on end. That is why I would already recommend American River: Currents, especially if you are a reader who is looking to get lost in a unique but memorable novel!

American River: Currents will introduce the reader to a host of different characters all who have different paths in life. The characters the reader meets are incredible and their journeys will hook and captivate readers and keep the reader invested. One of the main characters is Kate and her journey is a poignant one because she is mourning the death of her brother which makes for emotive reading. Kate however will soon meet Stefan and something special blossoms between the two but this complicates matters and this is the primary plot for American River: Currents, however so much more happens book lovers! The story the reader gets to experience is vast and exceptional and a novel that should definitely not be missed.

The story of American River: Currents is an incredible one that is powerful as well as moving. As I read American River: Currents, I felt like my heart was in my mouth because the book was full of pent-up tension which felt like it would burst at any moment. The only way I can describe it is like an earthquake barrier. Over time tectonic plates build up tension, more and more,, and then suddenly it breaks and all that tension and energy is thrust out and explodes in the form of an earthquake, and that is how I would describe American River: Currents because from beginning to end the story is dramatic as well as unpredictable.

Mallory M. O’Connor is a magnificent writer who clearly knows how to write thought-provoking, poignant but entertaining stories. O’Connor’s exciting story will have the readers turning the pages from beginning to end, and this is thanks to the twists and turns which are laced throughout the book and the unpredictable nature of the story. The reader will never once be able to guess the plot, and that is the sheer greatness of the book.

Overall American River: Currents is a moving, thrilling and exciting read that captured my heart and ran off with it. If you are a reader who is looking to get lost in a tale packed full of emotion and poignancy, then have a read of American River: Currents because you will not regret it! It’s always great to read a review of my work and say, “Wow! They GOT IT!” That’s how I feel about your review of book two of my American River Trilogy. I feel that you really understand my characters and the difficult path/s they are following as they try to achieve their goals. Sometimes they are their own worst enemies! I also felt that you actually read the book. I can’t say that about all the reviews I get, so that’s another plus.I think you enjoyed reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it and that’s a pretty… Read more »
