Agents Of Hope, Jack McDaniel

Action & Adventure, Dystopian & Post Apocalyptic, Literature & Fiction

Survivors of Pan21—who didn’t report to one of the camps—are being hunted by a ruthless group of Texas Rangers throughout the Republic. Destin, a young survivor who is one of the terrorists at large, has learned to cope and survive on his own, traveling the Republic on freight trains and in the back of semi trucks, moving from place to place to stay ahead of the law, developing back up plans, contingencies, always contingencies.

But Destin longs for more. He’s searching for community and a place to belong. He’s tired of being alone. The only problem is the paranoia. It won’t let him trust anyone or hang around long in any one area. But then he meets Bird, a quirky girl who offers him more. She allures him with answers to his questions and a way out of the constant running.

Everything goes haywire when the two become hunted by one of the Rangers, Phillip Insco. It’s a race to get to the barrio and avoid the Ranger. There is one question Destin has to answer: is Bird who she says she is and are the barrio and the resistance, Texas Underground, real?

A short while ago I read and reviewed an incredible book called Agents of the Undertow which is book one in the Pan21 series written by the talented author Jack McDaniel. McDaniel’s first book was phenomenal, so much so that I raced through it and awarded it five stars thanks to the gripping storyline and thrilling narrative. Once I finished Agents of the Undertow I was desperate to read the second book in the series called Agents Of Hope. I have now finished this book and will be reviewing it today for you, and I can honestly write that Agents Of Hope is just as brilliant, if not more brilliant than Agents of the Undertow so read these two books to find out why!

Agents Of Hope is a continuation of the story from Agents of the Undertow, for those readers that do not know about the first book, I will enlighten you so you can be up to date. Agents of the Undertow is set in dystopian America in which a deadly plague known as Pan21 has wiped out the majority of humanity, leaving only a few survivors. The reader will be taken to the Republic of Texas where survivors gather, however, even though they have survived they have been permanently changed, both mentally and physically because they have lost all the pigmentation in their skin, hair, and eyes. The survivors are being vilified by William Chaste, the new Administrator of the Republic; Chaste has taken it upon himself to form an Army called the ‘Grey Alliance’. The alliance has one objective, and that is to ‘protect’ the republic by any means necessary as he believes that they are still carrying the deadly plague.

Agents Of Hope continues this story but the reader will follow a new protagonist in this book, and that is a young survivor called Destin. Destin is a survivor who has not reported to one of the camps survivors are meant to report to and who can blame him after all these are not nice places to be and terrible things happen there. Because Destin has not reported himself, he is now trying to survive and to outrun the ruthless hunters who want to capture him as well as round up other survivors. Destin, however, is sick of running, he wants to thrive, not just survive but he is haunted by paranoia and he can’t trust anyone. Well, that is until he meets a sweet but peculiar girl called Bird and when they meet, their lives will be changed forever. The reader will follow Destin and Bird as they try to survive the harsh landscape and ruthless ‘Rangers’ who hunt them… will they be successful? Read the phenomenal Agents Of Hope to find out!

The story of Agents Of Hope is just as incredible as the first story in Agents of the Undertow but dare I say it, the story might be a little better, and I will explain why. I love both books and Agents of the Undertow was a great book that set up the landscape of dystopian America and gives the reader background information on the happenings/pivotal events. Agents Of Hope, however, is an expansion of this story, in the first book the reader is excellently introduced to the world but in the second book, the excellent author Jack McDaniel now has the room to expand on his story, so that is why Agents Of Hope is truly exceptional. I have to admit that I am impressed with McDaniel’s ability to develop on the world he has already created, this is very difficult to do, especially because the first book is so well-developed but McDaniel manages to accomplish the expansion with ease.

Along the journey in book two, the reader will see a new, terrifying side to the Republic of Texas and the horrific Rangers who are ruthless in their ways of rounding up survivors. Book one was focused on the world building and the beginning of the series but Agents of Hope shows us readers the gritty, terrifying side to the world which focuses on the survivors and this was a fascinating insight for so many reasons.

One reason it was so fascinating is because Jack McDaniel highlights what it would be like for a survivor who was living in a dystopian landscape. I am sure that one day a deadly event/plague will occur and McDaniel highlights how terrifying this could be for humans and so it truly was intriguing.

Jack McDaniel has once again impressed me with his literature and his ability to hook me from the very few chapters. McDaniel captivates his reader by his long descriptions and superb character development, he has a remarkable knack and ability to create wholesome characters who are believable as well as likable and because he does the reader will be able to invest and root for them.

As Agents Of Hope is a stellar sequel and the second in a much-loved series I, of course, have to award this book five stars! If you are a reader who is looking to get lost in an action packed, intriguing story that will keep you reading for hours on end, then please read Agents Of Hope as well as Agents of the Undertow as they are both excellent and should not be missed!

Awesome review, Aimee. Thank! I purposely chose different heroes for each book in the series (even though the other characters are still there). I thought the change in perspective would keep the story lively and avoid the staleness a lot of series like this get.

The book are available on Amazon, B&N, Audible iTunes and at your local bookstores. If they don’t have them in stock they can order them quickly.
