A Promise Given, Michelle Cox

Murder & Crime, Mystery & Suspense, Thriller & Psychological Thriller

Anxious to be married, Henrietta and Clive push forward with their wedding plans despite their family differences, made worse now by Oldrich Exley’s attempts to control the Von Harmons. When the long-awaited wedding day arrives, there is more unfolding than just Clive and Henrietta’s vows of love. Stanley and Elsie’s relationship is sorely tested by the presence of the dashing Lieutenant Harrison Barnes-Smith and by Henrietta’s friend Rose—a situation that grows increasingly dark and confused as time goes on.

As Clive and Henrietta begin their honeymoon at Castle Linley, the Howards’ ancestral estate in England, they encounter a whole new host of characters, including the eccentric Lord and Lady Linley and Clive’s mysterious cousin, Wallace. When a man is murdered in the village on the night of a house party at the Castle, Wallace comes under suspicion—and Clive and Henrietta are reluctantly drawn into the case, despite Clive’s anxiety at involving his new bride and Henrietta’s distracting news from home.

Delicately attempting to work together for the first time, Clive and Henrietta set out to prove Wallace’s innocence, uncovering as they do so some rather shocking truths that will shake the Linley name and estate forever.

A Promise Given is a gritty, sinister and thrilling mystery suspense novel that will captivate and enthrall its readers from the very first page. A Promise Given is a novel I was intrigued to read about from the premise alone, the premise discusses a murder at a house party in a small village in England which in turn brings two newlyweds to team up to solve the crime, and when I read this, I was hooked. The premise made me want to read A Promise Given straight away because I love murder mysteries and I love even more when they are set in villages and small, closed off communities because it adds to the suspense and atmosphere of the book! From beginning to end I was turning the pages fast with haste thanks to the abundance of intrigue, drama and dramatic events. If you are a reader who loves mystery and crime, then you should read this book as it is unlike anything you have read before or will ever read!

A Promise Given follows the two core protagonists of the novel, Henrietta, and Clive who, at the beginning of the story are desperate to get married despite the obvious difference between their two families. When the big day comes, they are thrilled, and after the wedding, they begin their honeymoon. However, their honeymoon does not get off to a good start because a man is murdered in the village and this, in turn, puts one particular character under suspicion, Wallace, who is Clive’s cousin who has a mysterious past. Clive soon decides that he needs to investigate the crime himself and his new wife Henrietta helps. The reader will follow the newly married pair on their journey to uncover the truth of the murder and discover whether Clive’s cousin did, in fact, commit the crime. What follows is an action-packed novel that is guaranteed to thrill, shock and surprise you lovely readers from beginning to end!

The story laced between the pages of A Promise Given sensational and unlike anything I have read before. The story is an intriguing one because from the beginning the book is shrouded in mystery and secrecy, the reader does not know what is about to happen, and so it captivates them to read because they will be desperate to know what truly happened with the people involved!

Michelle Cox is a talented wordsmith who knows how to flawlessly write crime and mystery. In A Promise Given, Cox will slowly build tension over and over to one point when it will rupture, and the result of this is shocking, thrilling and entertaining. Not only is Cox a fantastic writer who knows how to build suspense throughout her book, but she is also a tremendous author because she knows to capture her reader’s attention and entertain them from beginning to end. Cox does just this by ensuring the reader is always entertained, and she fulfills this by lacing twists and turns as well as mystery throughout her book which will have the reader turning the pages with haste.

Overall A Promise Given is an outstanding, shocking and brilliant crime mystery novel so I have no choice but to award this incredible book a thrilling five stars! So please, if you are a reader who is looking to get lost in a brilliant novel, then A Promise Given is for you! I should quickly add also that A Promise Given is book three in the A Henrietta and Inspector series, personally I believe each book can be read individually and stand alone but if you want to know the two protagonists more then reading the whole series is recommended. Besides, you will fall so madly in love with A Promise Given that you won’t be able to resist reading the first two books!
